Late Colgate Goal Stuns Women’s Soccer
October 21, 2015 | Women's Soccer
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Colgate's Catherine Williams fired a loose ball off the bottom of the crossbar in the 84th minute to propel the visiting Raiders to a 1-0 victory over the Army women's soccer team on Wednesday evening at Clinton Field.
The result moved Colgate to 5-8-2 overall and 3-3-1 in the Patriot League, while Army dipped to 4-10-2 and 2-3-2 in the conference.
"The result is painful, but I thought our team played well for a majority of the game." head coach Marcia McDermott said. "There was a tremendous commitment across the board from everyone on this roster. If we keep playing like that we can turn these performances into positive results."
The first quality chance of the night came less than 15 minutes into the match when Katie Holder unleashed a right-footed blast from just outside the corner of the far side of the penalty area. Her shot sailed toward the far post, but missed just wide of the goal frame and the match remained scoreless.
Colgate had two opportunities on outside shots that were easily handled by Army keeper Jordan Cassalia before Holder's second chance was stopped by Colgate's Erin Cummings. A bouncing ball found Holder at the top of the box, but her volley was right into the midsection of the Colgate keeper.
Holder had three shots in the first 45 minutes, including a 25th minute strike from 22 yards away that was snared by Cummings. Army held a 6-2 shots advantage, but Colgate had a 3-1 edge in corners.
Early in the second half a long ball forward led to a hectic moment in the Army penalty area as Colgate tried to find the game's first goal. Army's back line, with the help of Cassalia, cleared the danger to keep the visitors off the board.
The Black Knights came within inches of scoring 10 minutes into the second half when Clare Shea helped set up a golden opportunity. The sophomore sent a cross into the box from the left side where Candace Stewart directed to Holder charging on the far post. Her left-footed redirection struck the crossbar and stayed out.
Minutes later, Colgate's Sarah Coy ran onto a diagonal ball, but her shot was secured by the incoming Cassalia.
Army responded with a header by Shea that went off the crossbar and over as the pace and physical nature of the match increased.
In the final 10 minutes of the match, Colgate possessed the ball in Army's half of the field prior to Williams' winner. The goal was her third of the year and proved to be the decisive tally.
Army finished with a 10-4 lead in shots and each team earned four corner kicks. Cummings totaled four saves and Cassalia had three on the other end for Army.
"I thought our communication and cohesiveness on the field was outstanding," McDermott added. "We really took a major step forward in how much more connected we were all over the field."
Army's next match is Saturday afternoon when it hosts Boston University on Senior Day. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. and the match can be seen live on the Patriot League Network.
