Women’s Rugby Knocks Off AIC in NCWVRA Semifinals
November 20, 2015 | Women's Rugby
PROVIDENCE, RI – The Army West Point women's rugby team claimed a 25-21 victory over Northeast Conference Rival AIC on Friday afternoon, earning a berth in the National Collegiate Women's Varsity Rugby Association (NCWVRA) championship game.
Army will face the winner of the Quinnipiac-Norwich matchup on Sunday at 1 p.m., in search of the first varsity women's rugby championship title.
"That was a typical Army vs. AIC game, coming down to the wire again," said head coach Bill LeClerc. "Both teams had to deal with some trying conditions and both struggled to find any rhythm, which made it a messy game. We'll take it and get prepared for Sunday."
The Black Knights dominated from the start, taking a 15-7 lead into the half as sophomore Nicole Heavirland accounted for all 15 of Army's first half points.
Heavirland dotted down in the 13th minute, converting her own score, to put Army up 7-0. The flyhalf then kicked for points in the 30th minute to give Army the 10-0 advantage.
AIC got on the board with just five minutes remaining in the half, cutting Army's lead to 10-7, but Heavirland would respond just three minutes later, scoring her second of the game to send Army into the break with the 15-7 lead.
Army kept the pressure on in the second half, as Sydney Dosset found the try zone in the 50th minute to give Army the 20-7 advantage.
The Yellow Jackets kept it interesting, pulling within six of the Army lead midway through the second half, but a try from Carissa Pekny with seven minutes remaining gave Army the 25-14 lead. AIC scored in the waning minutes of the second half, but Army was able to hold on for the 25-21 win.
Kickoff in the title game is slated for 1 p.m. from Providence, RI.
