UNC Greensboro Takes Series Opener
March 04, 2016 | Baseball
GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Army West Point baseball team dropped a 16-2 decision to UNC Greensboro on Friday afternoon at the UNCG Baseball Stadium. The Spartans jumped out to an early 6-0 lead and were ahead 11-0 after three frames in the opening contest of a three-game series.
The loss drops the Black Knights to 2-6 and UNC Greensboro moves to 7-2 in 2016.
"Today was a bad day for us," head coach Matt Reid said. "UNCG has a very good team and they can hit. They knocked us us around in a big time way and we had no answer for them. Their starter on the mound was tougher than us today and we will need to come back tomorrow and play hard."
Army was limited to four base hits as right-hander Hunter Smith twirled 7.0 innings surrendered a pair of unearned runs to improve to 1-0 on the year. Smith struck out seven and walked two before handing off to Keaton Haack, who tossed a 1-2-3 eighth before retiring the side in the ninth.
Senior Justin Reece accounted for two base hits, while John McCarthy went 1-for-3 with a walk and run scored. Freshman Trey Martin made his collegiate debut and doubled in the ninth inning.
The Spartans totaled 21 hits, led by L.J. Kalawaia and Collin Woody, who each went 4-for-6 with three RBI apiece. Ryan Sigmon and Dillon Stewart both contributed three hits, with Stewart scoring three runs and driving in a pair himself. Cesar Trejo was 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI as nine different Spartans recorded base hits.
Sophomore lefthander Jeremy Mortensen (1-2) took the loss for Army and gave up 11 runs (eight earned) on 12 hits over 2.2 innings. Freshman Jacob Carte was strong out of the Army bullpen, throwing 4.1 innings of one-run ball with three strikeouts. Classmate Tyler Giovinco pitched the eighth and allowed four runs on four hits.
The series resumes on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. when right-hander Matt Ball is scheduled to take the ball for the Black Knights.
