Baseball Drops Series Opener at Holy Cross
April 16, 2016 | Baseball
WORCESTER, Mass. – The Army West Point baseball team dropped its series-opener at Holy Cross 6-3 on Saturday afternoon at Fitton Field.
The Black Knights (12-22, 3-6 PL) were held in check by Holy Cross (16-20, 6-3 PL) starter Brendan King shut them down in order in three of his 5.1 innings of work while allowing five hits.
The Crusaders jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning of the seven inning affair with a pinch-hit RBI double by Connor Perry.
Army evened the score in the following inning as a stolen base by Kris Lindner forced a miscue by the Crusaders' shortstop that allowed Trey Martin to score from third. Martin led off the inning with a walk before Lindner recorded a one-out single.
Josh Hassell uncorked his sixth home run of the season in the home half of the fourth to retake the lead. The Crusaders would add two more runs in the fifth as a Bill Schlich single plated Nick Lovullo and a sacrifice bunt by Alex Votik brought in Anthony Critelli to extend their lead to 5-1.
Jon Rosoff started the rally in the sixth inning for Army with a one-out walk. A single by John McCarthy and another walk drawn, this time by Stu Schley, would chase King as Joe Cravero entered in relief. The second batter he faced was Brock Davidson who shot a two-run single to right to bring the Cadets within two at 5-3. That is as close as they would get, however, as Holy Cross would add one more insurance run.
