No. 12 Army Falls to No. 5 Penn State

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The 12th-ranked Army West Point gymnastics team fell to No. 5 Penn State, 414.20-396.05, Saturday evening in Happy Valley. The Black Knights improved after the West Point Open last weekend, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Nittany Lions.

ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND MEET NOTES
- For the second week in-a-row, the vault was Army's premier event. The Black Knights held a 0.150 point advantage over Penn State thanks to four gymnasts with marks over 14.000.
- Ryan Wilson championed the event with a 14.450. He was followed by Dominic DiFulvio (14.450) of PSU and teammates Leo Genders (14.200), Seth Cannon (14.050) and Alejandro Tombrink (14.000).
- The Black Knights' combined score of 68.250 in the high bar also topped the Nittany Lions' 67.300.
- Nathan Goff (14.050), Cannon (13.950) and Genders (13.850) swept the top three spots to give Army the advantage.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- On floor, Cannon was Army's top competitor and finished with a 13.650, while Erik Del Cid, converted a 13.600.
- Goff recorded the highest marks for Army on pommel horse with a 13.550, and on the rings with a score of 13.600. Brandon Shively (13.450) and Rex Scott (13.150) also posted marks over 13.000 on pommel, while Elliott Herman posted an impressive 13.000.
- In the final event of parallel bars, Nick McAfee (12.850), Elijah-Ty Phelps (12.800) and Cannon (12.800) recorded Army's top marks.
KEY MOMENT
- Army's top three sweep on the high bar over the No. 5 Nittany Lions kept the Black Knights in the meet along with the strong performance on vault for the second-straight weekend.
UP NEXT
- The Black Knights travel to Colorado Springs, Colo., next weekend to take on service academy rival Air Force.
