Black Knights Open League Play Against Colgate

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point softball team begins its Patriot League season this weekend as Colgate comes to West Point for a three-game set.
Saturday is scheduled to be a doubleheader, while Sunday will be a single game. Both days are slated to begin at noon.
Last season, Army took two of three games against the Raiders. Colgate won game one, 2-1, before the Black Knights posted a 7-4 win in the night cap. The rubber match went to extra innings, with Army winning 4-3 in eight innings.

ARMY (17-9, 0-0 Patriot League)
• The Black Knights begin Patriot League play after spending Spring Break in Florida, playing 11 games in the Sunshine State. Army went 6-5 in that time, including winning its last three contests.
• Senior Caroline Smith has been one of the Patriot League's most dominant pitchers during non-league play, leading the way with a 1.89 ERA, five complete games and two shutouts.
• Smith was named both the Patriot League Pitcher of the Week and Army's Athlete of the Week on Tuesday after going 3-0 last week with three complete games and two shutouts. She posted an ERA of 0.67 (2 earned runs in 21.0 innings), in addition to going 2-for-8 (.250 avg.) at the plate with two walks, two runs scored and an RBI.
• The freshman class has stepped up early in the season for Army, contributing 68 hits, 41 runs, 15 doubles, four triples, three home runs and 39 RBI.
• The early rookie standout Emily Ballesteros leads the team in hits (24), doubles (5), triples (2) and RBI (15). Her .320 batting average ranks third on the team.
• Sophomore Ashley Yoo is riding a four-game hitting streak and is one of three Black Knights with 20 or more hits.

• The Raiders hold a 62-51 advantage in the all-time series that dates back to Army's inaugural season in 1979.
• After getting off to a slow start, the Raiders have won five of their last eight contests.
• Colgate enters its first league series after its best offensive showing in 19 years.
• The Raiders defeated Yale, 18-2, their most runs in a game since topping Stony Brook 19-0 in 1998.
• Lauren La Terra is the workhorse for Colgate's offense with a team-best average of .393 (24-for-61), while slugging four doubles and two home runs. She has also driven in 12 and scored 10 runs.
