Army-Harvard Split Saturday Doubleheader
March 25, 2017 | Baseball
The Black Knights first notched a thrilling come-from-behind 8-7 victory in the opener, in which the Cadets tallied the tying run in the seventh before scoring four runs in the ninth to secure the win. The outing was originally scheduled for seven innings, so the victory marked Army's second extra innings win of the season.
In the nightcap, the Crimson took a 4-0 edge after three innings and never really looked back in an 11-5 triumph. The Black Knights tried to rally numerous times but weren't ever able to tally the needed runs to pull close.
Sophomore Trey Martin had a nice day, finishing 3-for-6 with an RBI, a double, a walk and a run scored. Senior Kris Lindner also had a solid outing compiling three hits, including his first triple of the year, and two runs scored in eight at bats.
Matt Hudgins, John McCarthy and Jon Rosoff also notched two hits each. Hudgins and McCarthy added to their season home runs total with nearly back-to-back long balls in Game 1. Hudgins now leads the team with three, while McCarthy has two.
Joe Santoro was credited with Army's victory in the opener after coming in to get a huge strikeout in the top of the eighth to retire the side. He also saw action in Game 2 and finished out his day not allowing any hits during his 1.2 innings of work. The rookie fanned four batters during his time on the mound as well.
Cam Opp dipped to 1-1 on the year after earning the loss on the hill in Game 2. The sophomore had to come into the game with one out in the first inning after starter Daniel Gibbons was injured.
Jeremy Mortensen got the starting nod in Game 1, giving up seven hits and four earned runs during his 3.2 innings of work. Jacob Carte then came in for relief allowing just one hit and one earned run during his 4.1 innings. The Charlotte, N.C., native also struck out a career-high seven batters in the game.
