Army Erases Five-Run Deficit in Win Over Holy Cross

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point softball team came back from a 6-1 deficit in the second inning to defeat Holy Cross 7-6 in the series opener on Saturday afternoon at the Army Softball Complex.
The Black Knights improved to 22-9 on the season and 4-0 in the Patriot League, while the Crusaders dropped to 3-16 overall and 0-1 in league play.

- The Black Knights scored seven runs on six hits and survived two errors defensively, while the Crusaders plated six runs on six hits and committed one error.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Holy Cross manufactured the game's first run in the opening frame on a bases-loaded fielder's choice before Army answered with the game-tying run on a sacrifice fly by Kennedy Harrison that scored Ashley Yoo.
- The Crusaders retook the lead in the second inning, scoring five runs on four hits and a two-out miscue by the Black Knights that allowed two runs to score.
- Army had a persistent attack, scoring runs in three of the next five innings.
- Poirier scored the Cadets' second run of the game in the bottom of the second on a fielding error that put Gladys Esparza-Gallegos on base to start chipping away at the Holy Cross lead.
- After entering the game, Poirier allowed just three base runners throughout the final 5.1 innings of the game for the Crusaders.
- Following a quiet two innings, the Army bats came to life in the bottom of the sixth which started with back-to-back doubles by Grey and Poirier.
- Yoo slapped a single through the middle and advanced to second on the throw to put ducks on the pond for freshman Lacey Swafford. The Mayo, Fla., native slashed a two-run single to right field over the head of the Crusaders' second baseman that gave Army its first lead of the ballgame.
- Poirier completed the comeback victory by setting down the final seven batters she faced.

- The Black Knights and Crusaders will close out the series tomorrow with a doubleheader. First pitch is slated for noon.
