Strong Start Lifts Rutgers Over Army in Game Two
March 10, 2018 | Baseball
Â
The Scarlet Knights scored six runs in the second inning and added four more in the third to get out to an early 10-run edge. Senior right-hander Matt Ball saw his scoreless innings streak halted at 14 after setting down the side in order in the top of the first, including a pair of strikeouts. A 3-run home run by Carmen Sclafani pushed the designated "visitors" lead to 13 in the fifth before the Black Knights got on the board.
Â
Army's bats came alive in the bottom half of the inning with all the damage coming with two outs. Jacob Hurtubise kick-started the offense with a walk before four-straight hits by Drake Titus, Jon Rosoff, John McKenna and Anthony Giachin.
Â
Titus' double drove in Hurtubise prior to Rosoff trading places with him with a two-bagger down the left field line. McKenna pulled a 2-2 pitch through the left side to drive his catcher in for the third run. The final run of the inning came on a bases-loaded walk by Matt Hudgins that plated McKenna.
Â
The two sides traded runs in the following frame as well, with Army's coming off a Titus sacrifice fly to right. He scored Hurtubise who smacked a one-out triple to center field.
Â
After a quiet seventh and eighth, the Scarlet Knights stretched their lead back to double-digits at 15-5 on a wild pitch in the last inning.
Â
Army did not go out without a fight, however, as the top of the order provided some excitement once again in the ninth. Giachin drove in the first run of the rally with a single down the line in right field after walks from Hurtubise and McKenna. McKenna scored during the next at-bat on a wild pitch before a Rob Regine walk. That would be the final base-runner for the Black Knights, however, as a pop out in foul territory ended the contest.
Â
Seven of the Cadets' eight hits came from the top half of their starting lineup, combining to go 7-for-18 (.389 avg.). McKenna and Giachin led that effort with a pair of hits out of the four and five holes.
