WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army West Point hockey (2-1-1, 0-1-0 Atlantic Hockey America) fell 3-1 Tuesday night to the Canisius Golden Griffins (4-1-0, 1-0-0 Atlantic Hockey America) in the first league game of the year for both teams.
The Golden Griffins struck quickly, developing a 2-0 lead in the first period that expanded to a 3-0 lead in the second frame. Army got on the scoreboard late in the third period, but the visitors left West Point with a win out of the Tuesday night matchup.
JJ Cataldo returned as Army's goaltender with 29 saves against 32 total shots faced.
Chase Clark stood between the pipes for Canisius, tallying 29 saves against 30 shots.
The visitors went to work quickly in the Tuesday night game, finding the back of the net just three minutes into the action before doubling their lead six minutes later with a rush on the Black Knights' net.
The Black Knights then took a run at the Griffs, putting five shots on goal to Canisius' one in the remaining minutes of the period but the looming presence of Clark in net held the Black Knights scoreless through the first 20 minutes of action.
The two teams continued to trade control of the puck throughout the second period as both teams put shots on goal that were denied by their respective opposing goaltenders.
Canisius broke the stalemate with 13 minutes expired off the clock to put the Griffs ahead on a three-goal advantage that stood through the second intermission.
Army came out swinging in the third period, fighting for a place on the scoreboard as aggressively as the Golden Griffins were hunting for their fourth goal of the night.
The Black Knights found the back of the net with 40 seconds left on the clock as sophomore forward Ben Ivey capitalized on a six-on-five opportunity to bury the rebound off a shot from Jack Ivey to thwart Canisius' attempt at a shutout.
