ITHACA, N.Y. – The Army West Point men's basketball team battled tough for 40 minutes but came up short, falling 86-73 on the road against Cornell on Tuesday night at Newman Arena.
Army (1-4) was able to cut the Cornell lead to five with just over 12 minutes to play but the Big Red closed out strong to hand the Black Knights if fourth consecutive loss.
Jorn Everson and Jace Holloway each had huge games for Army, as both players recorded career-highs in points, as Everson led the way with 24 while Holloway was right behind him with 22. Both players were also efficient on Tuesday, as the duo went 17-29 from the field and 6-11 from three.
It was a high-scoring affair from the jump, as Army started out with a strong 5-0 lead but the two teams went into the opening media timeout tied at 10 apiece. The two teams traded a couple of baskets coming out of the break but Cornell went on a 13-4 run to break the game open and take a 11-point lead at the under-four media timeout. The Black Knights were unable to narrow the deficit going into the locker room, as Cornell led 39-28 after the opening 20 minutes.
Army turned it over eight times in the opening half, leading to 11 fastbreak points for Cornell. The Black Knights also struggled shooting the ball, knocking down just 9-33 shots – including 2-14 from distance. Everson had nine of his 24 points in the opening frame.
Much like it did to open the game, Army came out fast in the second half and used a 9-2 run to cut Cornell's advantage to just four. The Black Knights continued to play good basketball in the opening segment of the second half and trailed 46-42 at the first media timeout.
The Black Knights continued to battle through the half and kept it a five-point game with 8:36 to go. However, the Big Red caught fire after that and used an 11-4 run to push their lead back to double figures at 71-60. Over the course of the final 4:15, Cornell's lead never fell below 11.
Army shot it better in the final 20 minutes, sitting at 46.9 percent from the field but it was unable to slow down Cornell who knocked shots down at a 55.2 percent rate. Holloway and Everson each had 15 points in the half and were key reasons why Army was able to keep it close and have a shot late.
