WEST POINT N.Y. – Army West Point hockey (4-8-3, 1-8-2 Atlantic Hockey America) secured a ranked win over the No. 18 University of Massachusetts Minutemen (8-8-0, 2-5-0 Hockey East) at Tate Rink Saturday afternoon by a score of 5-4.
For the Black Knights, this is their second win over a ranked opponent this season, after they defeated now-ranked No. 11 Northeastern on October 10. Sophomore Jacob Biron started at goalie for the Black Knights, where he recorded 34 saves against the Minutemen's 38 shots on goal.
Across the ice, UMass sent junior goaltender Michael Hrabal between the pipes where he recorded nine saves on Army's 14 shots on goal during his time on the ice. After the second intermission, the Minutemen placed junior Jackson Irving in goal where he recorded eight saves on all eight of the Black Knights' shots on goal during the third period.
The Black Knights came out aggressive from the first puck drop, taking four shots on goal in five minutes of action before the Minutemen could record a shot of their own.
After seven minutes of play had elapsed, UMass scored the first goal of the night. The Minutemen stayed on the attack after getting on the board first, taking three shots on goal in the next three minutes while simultaneously holding Army away from the opportunity to tie the score.
An Army penalty set UMass up for a power play that the visiting team quickly capitalized on. With just over two minutes left to play before the first intermission, the Minutemen scored their second goal of the afternoon.
With only 45 seconds left to play in the first period, the Black Knights turned the tides in their favor. Sophomore Nils Forselius captured the rebound on a shot from Ben Ivey and came from behind the Minutemen's net to force the puck past Hrabal to get Army on the board. The forward's third goal of the season gave the Black Knights the momentum heading into the first intermission.
Army started the second frame looking to build off the momentum gained from their goal late in the first period. A UMass penalty for tripping two minutes into the period sent Army on a power play, giving the home squad the opportunity to stay on the attack. With 2:43 elapsed off the game clock, the Black Knights tied the score at two with their second goal of the game.
Barron Woodring sent a pass behind the goal to Jack Ivey who found his twin brother Ben Ivey on the doorstep where he sent the puck through the five hole to even the score at two apiece.
The Black Knights continued to press for the advantage as just a minute and a half later they claimed their first lead of the afternoon. Vincent Salice completed a set up by Woodring on a two-on-one towards the UMass goal when he found the back of the net for Army's third goal of the game.
The Minutemen were quick to respond as they fought to slow down Army's momentum. UMass scored and tied the score at three five and a half minutes into the second frame.
For the next eleven minutes of the period, UMass sought to reclaim the lead, taking five shots on goal to Army's one. Great defense from Biron and the Black Knights kept the score tied at three.

UMass continued their power play and tied the score once again just 23 seconds after Woodring's goal. Despite the Minutemen's pressure to retake the lead in the final minutes of the second frame, outstanding defense in goal from Biron maintained the game's even footing.

'around Hrabal and into the back of the goal.
