WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army West Point hockey (3-3-3, 1-3-2 Atlantic Hockey America) fell in the second game of its home and home series against the Bentley Falcons (5-3-1, 5-0-1 Atlantic Hockey America) in a 3-2 loss at home Sunday afternoon.
The Falcons scored two goals before Army could get on the board with a goal from Nik Hong in the second period and extended to a 3-1 lead in the third before Hong scored his second goal of the night with just under a minute and 40 seconds left on the clock.
The two teams were neck-and-neck for control of the momentum throughout the contest with 22 shots on goal for Army and 23 shots on goal for the Falcons.
JJ Cataldo took to the net once more for the Black Knights, earning 20 saves in his time on the ice.
At the other end of the rink, Bentley posted Lukas Swedin in goal where he also earned 20 saves throughout the game.
The Falcons came out of the gates on the attack in search of a win after Army claimed the shootout win just two days prior as Bentley put a shot on goal just 15 seconds into the action.
Army fought hard to defend its home ice, pressing back hard for control of the momentum as the first period wore on but the Falcons found the back of the net first for the second time in the series with 15:49 elapsed from the play clock.
The Black Knights withstood the first penalty of a five-on-three opportunity for Bentley following a slashing call against Jude Brower and a cross-checking penalty for Owen Nolan were handed out within 50 seconds of each other.
Bentley found the back of the net just nine seconds after Brower was released from the box for the fifth overall power play goal of the series and the first goal of the night.
The Black Knights put a flurry of shots on goal as the clock ticked down on the first frame, but the score held firm at 1-0 for the visitors throughout the first intermission.
Army set out to equalize the score with a quick pace to start the second period but after a brief delay in the game Bentley's squad extended its lead to two.
The Black Knights would not be denied much longer, however, and Nik Hong netted his first of the night just 19 seconds later on a set up from Adam Marshall and Billy Batten that left Hong with open ice on which to approach Swedin and lift the puck over his glove side from just outside the crease.
The two teams traded control of the puck throughout the remainder of the period, but Bentley carried the 2-1 advantage into the break.
Bentley grabbed control of the puck as the third period began, putting two shots on goal in the first minute and a half of the final frame but JJ Cataldo delivered saves to hold Army within one.
The Black Knights retaliated with two shots on goal of their own in the next minute, but Bentley's lead extended to a 3-1 advantage just over three minutes into the action.
Army turned up the heat as the third period wore on, fighting to earn a win in front of its home crowd but their next goal wouldn't hit the scoreboard until only a minute and 39 seconds remained in the game.
The Black Knights' defense closed in around JJ Cataldo after a pair of back-to-back shots on goal from the Falcons on a power play but a shrewd move from Hong to stay high in the neutral zone after he was released from the penalty box put him in position for a breakaway as Barron Woodring and Brent Keefer cleared the puck from Army's crease and onto Hong's stick where he fired it high over Swedin's glove side once more for his second goal of the game.
Army fired off a flurry of shots in the dwindling seconds of play but stalwart shot blocking by the Falcons held the score at 3-2 for Bentley through the final whistle.
