Men's Basketball Heads to Charm City for Game at UMBC

WEST POINT, N.Y. — Army West Point men's basketball (4-7) hit the road for the first time in the month of December on Friday, heading to Baltimore to take on the UMBC Retrievers (6-4) on Dec. 12.
This will be the second meeting of these two programs. The two programs first met on Dec. 1, 2017, with Army getting the 81-70 win against the Retrievers at the Papa John's Bulldog Bash in Charleston, South Carolina. Friday's game marks the first time Army will head to Maryland to take on UMBC.
The game inside Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena is set for a 6 p.m. ET first tip, with the game also streaming live on ESPN+.
ARMY STORYLINES:
WHAT HAPPENED LAST GAME – Army returned to the win column on Sunday afternoon, earning a win over the Gallaudet University Bison, 111-53. The win set two program records for the Black Knights. First, the total 111 points served as the most points Army has scored in a game that did not go to overtime in program history. The most points Army has scored in a game was in their 116-110 double-overtime win over Bucknell last season.
CHEF (RYAN) CURRY – Junior guard Ryan Curry returns for his third season with the Black Knights, currently averaging a team-high 13.3 points a game while adding a team-high 5.0 assists a game. The junior has scored in double digits for the past nine games. The junior scored a season-best 26 points with a career-high eight rebounds and a season-high seven assists against Manhattan. Curry also scored 16 points and had eight rebounds against Marist. He finished with 14 points against FDU. He scored 13 points while adding a game-high six assists at Cornell. Most recently, he scored 12 points while adding a season-high eight assists plus five rebounds against Gallaudet.
THE WALLET – A key role player for Army, Kevin McCarthy averages 9.5 points a game. In Army's game against Gallaudet on Sunday, the sophomore sharpshooter matched several career-highs, which encompassed points (18) with field goals made (7), three-pointers made (4) and assists (4). Now, he has scored 4+ three-pointers in four games this season, including the game against Gallaudet, which includes Army's matchups between Maritime, St. Thomas and East Texas A&M. He also earned a season-high six rebounds at Cornell. He has finished five games scoring in double-digits this season.
RING THE BELL – Sophomore guard Jaxson Bell played a crucial role off the bench for Army this season, now averaging 9.2 points a game. Bell finished Army's game against GW with a team-high 15 points. Against Manhattan, Bell finished with a career-high 19 points, also adding career-highs in made field goals (6), made three-pointers (5) and minutes (31). Against FDU, Bell finished the game with a team-high 16 points alongside adding a career-high seven rebounds, with eight points coming from the free throw line. The game on Tuesday marked Bell's fourth double-digit performance of the young 2025-26 season, with Bell also finishing with 11 points in Army's matchup against Harvard on Nov. 15
THE BOOGEYMAN – Sophomore forward Jacen Holloway is currently second on the team in scoring efforts for Army, averaging 10.4 points a game while shooting 51.7 percent from the floor. On November 18, Holloway had a career performance, earning a career-best 22 points on the road against Cornell. He also added career-highs in field goals made (9) and three-pointers made (2). His performance also marked his first 20+ point performance in his career and his third double-digit performance in the young season. Most recently, he finished with 11 points in 15 minutes against Gallaudet.
THE SIXTH MAN – Freshman guard Jackson Furman has made an immediate impact for the Black Knights, averaging 10.4 points a game off the bench while averaging 19.6 minutes a game. The plebe earned a career-high and game-high 20 points against Duke, shooting 53.8 percent from the floor and 55.5 percent from the three-point line. Furman also earned 17 points in his first collegiate game against SUNY Maritime, the most a freshman has scored in his debut in 11 seasons and the second most since 2000. He earned his first career start against Manhattan and added 11 points against GW and Gallaudet alongside a career-high seven rebounds and three assists.
JORNADO WARNING – Jorn Everson played a key role off Army's bench last season and now serves as a primary member of Army's starting lineup and currently averages 8.9 points a game. The senior had a strong showing against Cornell on the road, finishing with a career-best and game-high 24 points, while tying his career-highs in made field goals (8) and three-pointers made (4). He also had a career-high four made free throws. The game marked the second game Everson has scored 20+ points in a single game.
TATE ON THE BOARD – Junior forward Tate Laczkowski, the tallest player on Army's roster, serves as the biggest rebounding threat for Army. Laczkowski leads Army, averaging 5.0 rebounds a game, earning nine rebounds in his first career start versus Maritime, eight rebounds against St. Thomas and seven rebounds at Cornell, all three being team-highs. In Army's first two games, he added four points and one block against Maritime and five points in a career-high 31 minutes against St. Thomas. Laczkowski tied his career-high in points on Nov. 29, earning nine against Manhattan, alongside tying his career-best of two blocks.
HELD IN HIGH REGARD – Team captain, Jackson Mayo, was named USMA's Deputy Brigade Commander, the second-highest-ranked position in the Corps of Cadets, over the summer. The senior scored a career-high nine points off a career-best three made three-pointers, while also adding career-highs in assists (5) and rebounds (3) against Gallaudet on Sunday.
FOR THE YOUNG GUNS – The Black Knights' roster will look different this season after graduating an eight-person senior class. Now on the 18-man roster, there are five upperclassmen and 13 underclassmen, with nine sophomores and four freshmen. The new freshmen joining Army include Jackson Furman, Dillon Watt, Dylan Benner and Jahaan Green. Before joining the Academy, Furman, Benner and Green each played a year at the United States Military Academy Preparatory School (USMAPS).

Scouting the Retrievers
- UMBC is 6-4 through its first 10 games of the 2025-26 season, featuring wins against Penn State-York, Morgan State, Wagner, Notre Dame of Maryland, Delaware State and Bucknell, one of Army's Patriot League opponents.
- Head coach Jim Ferry is in his fifth year at the helm in Baltimore. He currently holds a 66-72 record with the team. Before his time at UMBC, Ferry coached at Plymouth State, Adelphi, LIU, Duquesne and Penn State.
- Jah'Likai King leads the Retrievers in scoring, averaging 14.8 points a game while also adding 4.7 rebounds a game. He also adds 1.6 assists a game and 1.0 steals a game.
- DJ Armstrong Jr. is the only other Retriever who averages double-digits, averaging 11.5 points a game. Armstrong Jr. also adds 2.5 rebounds a game and 2.9 assists a game.
- Josh Odunowo leads the rebounding efforts with 5.0 rebounds a game, alongside adding 9.7 points a game. Ace Valentine helps run the offense with a team-high 4.8 assists while adding 9.8 points a game.
