February 04, 2025 | Hockey
WALTHAM, MA – Army West Point hockey (11-16-0, 11-9-0 Atlantic Hockey America) saw its six-game winning streak come to end with a 5-2 defeat at Bentley (14-12-2, 12-7-2 Atlantic Hockey America) on Tuesday night.
Army took a 2-0 lead early in the second period before the Falcons battled back to tie the game at two late on in the second.
Barron Woodring and Joey Baez registered the goals for Army while JJ Cataldo made 36 saves in net for the Black Knights, the third-highest total of his career.
Army wasted no time in gaining an early lead on the road, with Barron Woodring opening the scoring less than five minutes in.
Vincent Salice delivered a centering pass in stride for Woodring, who still had plenty to do and beat Connor Halsley from a tight angle with a shot that found the top right corner over Halsley's shoulder.
Army controlled the opening period, outshooting the Falcons 15-10 while killing off the lone penalty of the frame.
The second saw the Falcons come out strong, but it was Army getting the goal early on to doubles its lead.
Joey Baez was the beneficiary as Pierce Patterson fired a puck which took a deflection off the hip of Baez that beat Halsley through the five-hole as the Black Knights took a 2-0 lead 2:34 in.
The rest of the frame saw Bentley assert itself, firing 21 shots on goal in the period. Two were able to beat Cataldo, the first coming midway through the period from Chase Davis before Ryan Mansfield equalized with 3:01 remaining in the period. Army took a penalty in the final minute of the frame, but survived until the intermission with the score knotted at two.
The Falcons took advantage of their man-advantage in the closing seconds as Mansfield got his second of the game and the first on the power play from either side in the contest. Less than four minutes later, Stephen Castagna finished off loose puck in front to put the home team ahead 4-2.
Bentley stayed out of the box and limited Army's opportunities throughout, assuring the three points at home. Ethan Leyh added an empty net goal, bringing the final score to 5-2.
The Black Knights will return on Friday night to host Sacred Heart for senior night at Tate Rink with puck drop set for 7:00 p.m.
