Baseball Rallies on Easter Sunday to Secure Sweep over Lafayette
April 20, 2025 | Baseball
Thomas Schreck—whose three-run home run one game earlier gave Army breathing room to secure the series—was once again the hero offensively Sunday, with a two-run double to the left field fence in the eighth to score both Michael Delph and pinch-runner Kevin Luke, putting the Black Knights ahead for good.
It was the third time the home team erased a deficit in the weekend finale. A pair of sacrifice flies from Schreck and Chris Barr tied the game at 5-5 in the sixth inning, before a one-run seventh from Lafayette gave them the lead back.
For the first time across the three-game series, the Leopards drew first blood, with a leadoff solo home run. Army would respond with a three-run bottom of the first, via a sacrifice fly from William Parker, a double off the bat of Jack Quinlan and a one-run single from Michael Delph.
Lafayette retook the lead with three runs in the second and extended their cushion with another run in the fourth, but Army's bullpen proved instrumental in keeping the game within arms reach.
After starting pitcher Bryce Brownlee was replaced after an inning of work, Mark Abell entered the game and struck out three over three innings, allowing just a single unearned run.
Joe Valchar—off just three days rest after a 2.1 inning start vs. Holy Cross Wednesday—pitched four innings and struck out six, allowing a run in the seventh but claiming the win. Kevin Reavey followed in the ninth, working around a leadoff single and standing a runner on third to earn the save.
The Black Knights finish the weekend 3-0 and conclude the season series vs. Lafayette with a 5-0 mark. Army moves to 19-19 overall and 13-9 in the Patriot League, getting back to .500 overall for the first time since a doubleheader split at North Alabama on opening day.
By the Numbers
5: Army's five doubles Sunday were tied for second-most hit in a single game this year.
2-for-3: Delph and Schreck were each 2-for-3, combining for five RBIs.
6: Valchar retired each of the first six batters faced in relief from the fifth to the sixth inning.
Black Knight Notes
Schreck upped his on-base streak to 24 games. Coleson Titus and Barr currently follow at 14 and 11 games respectively.
The Black Knights won for the first time in 2025 when trailing after seven innings, and the second time when trailing after seven or eight. Army trailed after eight at Lafayette March 22 on the back end of a doubleheader but came back to win.
Army's three-game series sweep was the first by the program in a series of three or more games since April 22-23, 2023 at Navy. The Black Knights finish a regular season 5-0 against the same team for the first time since vs. Navy in 2023.
Next Up
Army embarks on a four-game road trip, beginning Wednesday at UConn for a 5:05 p.m. first pitch. The Black Knights return to Patriot League play at Bucknell April 25-27 before next playing at home vs. LIU April 30.
