February 20, 2026 | Softball
STEPHENVILLE, Texas — Army West Point softball (3-8) opened the Texan Classic at the Tarleton Softball Complex 1-1, first falling to the University of Pittsburgh Panthers (6-5), 0-5, then taking a dominant win over the University of Tulsa Golden Hurricane (3-9), 10-5.
The day was headlined by Breanna Coonfare, who finished the day with five hits in five at-bats, reaching base six times throughout the day. She finished the day with three singles, two doubles, one run and one RBI.
The day was highlighted by Army's offensive slug fest against Tulsa, finishing with 10 runs, all scored in the first inning. The Black Knights also finished the game with a total of 14 hits.
Ashton White, Samantha Sims and Breanna Coonfare each finished with three hits each, with White cashing in a three-run home run to finish with a team-best three RBIs.
Taylor Brown and Mia Bonsignore each added two hits and two RBIs, then Makaila Moosbrugger added one hit as well. Sienna Tepley, Coonfare and Sims also each added one RBI. Each player in Army's starting lineup scored a run against Tulsa, with Taylor Brown having the most with two.
Breanna Izzo went on to finish the day 1-1, totaling a 3.00 ERA in seven innings pitched while finishing with seven strikeouts. Katelyn Flanders threw four innings in relief, only allowing one hit. Amanda Eaglin also got the start in the game against Tulsa, finishing the day throwing for three innings.
GAME 1
The first inning was quiet for both Army and Pitt, with both teams going three and out to start the game. Breanna Izzo, who received her second-straight start, did earn her first strikeout of the game.
Pitt got on the board first at the top of the second inning, taking a 1-0 lead. The inning started with a flyout, then a throwing error by Taylor Brown at shortstop allowed the first runner on base.
Breanna Izzo followed the error, throwing her second strikeout of the day, but a single up the middle would allow the runner to score. Pitt would load the bases thanks to another hit and walk, but Annie Christiana made a catch in left center to force Pitt to leave three stranded.
In the bottom of the second inning, the Black Knights went three and out again, with Caitlyn Newburn flying out, Hannah Laub striking out and Emma Murchison grounding out.
The Panthers added a double in the top of the third inning, but Breanna Izzo and the Army defense were able to keep the runner from scoring.
Breanna Coonfare added Army's first hit of the game, singling up the middle to get on base in the bottom of the fourth. Back-to-back sacrifice bunts from Micaela Garcia and Annie Christiana advanced Coonfare to third base. Sienna Tepley then hit towards the pitcher, nearly beating out the throw, but was called out at first, keeping Army scoreless.
Pitt saw a big scoring inning in the top of the fourth inning, scoring four runs off of two hits and two Army errors to make a 5-0 game.
The inning started with Pitt hitting a single, then adding a sacrifice bunt of their own. Pitt then drew two walks off of Izzo to load the bases. Then, the next batter singled to shallow left field, allowing one run to score, and a fielding error by Annie Christiana allowed the runner at second to score, making it a 3-0 game.
The Black Knights then made a pitching change, with Katelyn Flanders entering the game as relief. The next at bat, the ball was hit right at Flanders, which resulted in a second straight fielding error that allowed a run to be scored against the Black Knights. With one out on the board, the next batter grounded out, but allowed the fourth run to come in to make it a 0-5 Army deficit. A flyout then ended the top of the fourth.
The Black Knights then went three and out for the third time in the game, keeping the score as is. In the top of the fifth, Pitt led off with a single, but during the next at-bat, Murchison connected with Taylor Brown to catch the runner stealing. Katelyn Flanders added her first strikeout and then Hannah Laub caught a foul ball to send it to the bottom of the inning.
Breanna Coonfare continued her strong hitting performance in the next frame. With two outs on board, Coonfare knocked a double to keep her perfect hitting percentage in the game. Despite reaching scoring position, Coonfare was left stranded.
The Panthers went three and out at the top of the sixth, then in the bottom of the sixth, Sienna Tepley got on base for the first time in the game, drawing a walk, but Army still could not convert a run, keeping the game at the 0-5 score.
In the seventh, the Black Knights opened the inning with two outs, but then Pitt drew a walk to put a runner on base. Yet, Pitt was cut short by Emma Murchison catching a foul ball to send it to the bottom of the inning, leaving Army three outs to pull a massive comeback.
Ashton White opened the inning, hitting a deep shot, but was caught by the Pitt defense in the outfield. Caitlyn Newburn then struck out with a full count. Maisi Sigler then entered to pinch hit for Army, but she flew out to left center, ending the game at a final score of 0-5.
GAME 2
Tulsa struck first at the top of the opening inning, stringing together three hits and a walk to load the bases. A two-out RBI single brought home the game's first run, but Army's defense limited further damage with a strikeout to escape the inning, trailing just 1–0.
The Black Knights responded with a massive rally in the bottom half that completely flipped the game.
Sienna Tepley started the surge with a walk, and Taylor Brown followed with a single to put two runners on. Ashton White then delivered the biggest swing of the day, a three-run home run to left field, instantly putting Army ahead 3–1.
The lineup kept rolling as Maisi Sigler walked and Breanna Coonfare singled to chase Tulsa's starting pitcher. Army showed exceptional plate discipline, drawing another bases-loaded walk before Bonsignore blasted a two-run double to center to make it 5–1.
Moments later, Samantha Sims drove in another run with a single, and Tepley added an RBI groundout. Brown capped the rally with a two-run double into left-center, extending the lead to 9–1.
Army was not done yet, as Coonfare later singled home another run to complete a stunning 10-run inning on eight hits, three walks, and relentless pressure on Tulsa's pitching.
From there, Army's pitching and defense focused on protecting the large cushion. Tulsa threatened in the second inning but was turned away without scoring. In the third, Tulsa manufactured two runs on a sacrifice fly and an RBI single, trimming the margin to 10–3, but Army prevented a bigger inning by recording two quick outs afterward.
The Black Knights continued to put runners on base, including doubles by Bonsignore and Sims in the second and a double by Coonfare in the third, but Tulsa managed to escape those threats without further damage.
Tulsa added two more runs in the fifth on a two-run double following a pair of walks, cutting the lead to 10–5. Army again limited the rally, preventing the momentum from shifting further.
Defensively, Army tightened down in the late innings. The pitching staff worked around baserunners in the sixth, aided by a strikeout and a routine groundout, and then delivered a dominant seventh inning. After issuing a walk with two outs, Army turned to reliever Katelyn Flanders, who ended the game emphatically with a called third strike to strand the runner and secure the victory.
