Hockey Takes Down Tigers 6-2 at Home

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army West Point hockey (11-12-5, 6-11-3 Atlantic Hockey America) took on the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) (15-12-2, 11-8-2 Atlantic Hockey America) for the first game of a two-game home series at Tate Rink on Friday night.
The Black Knights earned their 11th victory of the season as they delivered a decisive 6-2 win in front of their home crowd.
Army sent JJ Cataldo between the pipes for his 25th game of the season where he saved of 30 of the Tigers' 32 shots on goal. Cataldo's strong performance marked his tenth game of the season with at least 30 saves.
Across the ice, Jakub Krbecek stood in goal for RIT where the sophomore netminder put up 28 saves against Army's 34 shots on goal.
The matchup started to move in Army's favor as the Black Knights logged a shot on goal ten seconds into the game and a power play for the Black Knights started 19 seconds later. RIT held Army scoreless for the next few minutes to allow the Tigers to capture momentum.
Following the power play, the Tigers held the shots-on-goal advantage with nine shots on goal in the next ten minutes of play, but hard work from Cataldo in goal held the visitors scoreless.
Army quickly regained the momentum as the Black Knights scored their first goal of the night on a power play with 14:45 elapsed off the clock. The goal came off the stick of Jack Ivey, assisted by senior Barron Woodring and his brother sophomore Ben Ivey.
To close out the first period, RIT fought to recover after the goal by the Black Knights, but Army's penalty kill closed in to hold the Tigers scoreless on a power play.
RIT came out aggressive after the scoreless first period, putting up four shots on goal in the first five minutes and scoring their first goal of the night to bring the game even with 4:44 elapsed off the game clock.
Army was unfazed by the goal as the Black Knights responded with their second power play goal of the night two and a half minutes later, this time scored by Barron Woodring.
The Black Knights retained control of the puck as the second period wore on, leading the shots on goal battle 11-8 across the second frame.
Army's tenacity paid off once more in the second period when the Black Knights found the back of the net for the third time as Adam Marshall buried the puck in the back of the net off the set up from Billy Batten and Easton Zueger with four minutes left in the period.
The Black Knights' 3-1advantage held through the second intermission before the Tigers could find a response seven minutes into the third period but the one-goal game would not last long.
Adam Marshall made the most of a power play opportunity to score his second goal of the night two and a half minutes later to restore Army's two-goal lead.
Fellow sophomore forward Ben Ivey joined in on the fun, scoring two goals back-to-back as he completed a rush from Billy Batten and Marshal just before the 14-minute mark.
RIT fought aggressively for the chance to get more points on the board, but Army's defense closed in on the Tigers to hold them scoreless in the final frame.
Ben Ivey scored his second goal of the night with just two and a half minutes remaining on the game clock as he interrupted a pass between two Tigers and carried the puck up the ice for an empty net goal to secure Army's 6-2 lead that held through the final whistle.
