Softball Swept in Saturday Doubleheader At Rider
March 21, 2026 | Softball
LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. — Army West Point softball (11-16) headed south to the Garden State on Saturday, taking on the Rider University Broncs (11-13) in a doubleheader at Herb & Joan Young Field, seeing two 6-9 losses.
In game one, Army showed early offensive flashes and a late push, but ultimately fell to Rider 9–6 after the Broncs used a pair of middle-inning rallies to build separation.
Army built a lead behind timely hitting and aggressive baserunning in game two, but a late rally in the sixth and seventh innings by Rider proved decisive as the Black Knights fell 9–6 in dramatic fashion.
Ashton White was the driving force of Army's offense, earning a team-high four hits and two RBIs, adding her second triple of the season and a stolen base. Sienna Tepley and Breanna Coonfare were right behind White, the pair adding three hits each. Tepley laid down two bunt singles, while Breanna Coonfare added her team-leading eighth double of the season.
Taylor Brown, Mia Bonsignore and Hannah Laub each added two hits, with Laub going a perfect 2-2 in game one. Samantha Sims, Caitlyn Newburn and Emma Murchison each added a hit. Laub and Sims also matched White with two RBIs each.
Katelyn Flanders got the start for the Black Knights' pitching unit in game one, with Breanna Izzo and Kendall Holloway both coming in as relief. In game one, the Black Knights allowed 12 hits and seven earned runs. Breanna Izzo earned a team-high three strikeouts, while Kendall Holloway added her first collegiate strikeout.
Amanda Eaglin had the longest appearance out of all the Black Knights, pitching 6.2 innings. She finished the game allowing 10 hits, but ultimately only allowed two earned runs and zero walks.
GAME 1
The Black Knights threatened immediately in the first inning when Ashton White tripled to right field with two outs, but the opportunity slipped away before Army could score. Rider answered in the bottom half with an RBI double to take a 1–0 lead.
Army responded quickly in the second inning with one of its most efficient offensive sequences of the game. Emma Murchison worked a leadoff walk, and Breanna Coonfare followed with a double to put two runners in scoring position. Hannah Laub delivered a clutch two-RBI single to center field, scoring both runners and giving Army a 2–1 lead.
Rider countered in the bottom of the second, capitalizing on a combination of hits, a walk, and an Army error to score two runs and regain a 3–2 advantage. At that point, Breanna Izzo entered in relief and helped limit further damage, stranding multiple runners to keep the deficit manageable.
Army answered again in the third inning. White reached with a single and stole second, and moments later, Murchison delivered an RBI single, tying the game at 3–3 and continuing Army's pattern of responding to Rider's scoring.
After a scoreless third inning from the Black Knights' pitching staff, Rider regained the lead in the fourth with an RBI single, making it 4–3. Army continued to compete at the plate, getting a single from Taylor Brown in the fifth, but was unable to bring her around to score.
The game shifted in the fifth inning when Rider broke it open. The Broncs strung together multiple hits to plate three runs, extending their lead to 7–3. Rider added two more runs in the sixth, taking advantage of additional hits and an error to stretch the margin to 9–3.
Despite the deficit, Army continued to battle into the final inning. In the seventh, Hannah Laub sparked the rally with a single, and after an error put another runner aboard, the Black Knights capitalized on defensive miscues.
A pinch-hit play by Makaila Moosbrugger resulted in two runs scoring, and Ashton White followed with an RBI single to bring Army within 9–6. However, Rider's middle-inning offensive surge proved too much to overcome, as the Black Knights' comeback effort fell short in the loss.
GAME 2
Army threatened early in the first inning when Sienna Tepley reached on a bunt single and stole second, later advancing to third, but the Black Knights were unable to bring her home. Rider answered in the bottom half with an RBI single to take a 1–0 lead.
The Black Knights responded immediately in the second inning. Emma Murchison worked a leadoff walk, and after a sacrifice bunt, Breanna Coonfare delivered an RBI single to score Murchison and tie the game at 1–1.
Army continued to apply pressure offensively and broke through again in the fourth inning. After Maisi Sigler reached by hit-by-pitch and Coonfare singled, Mia Bonsignore added another base hit to load the bases. Samantha Sims then delivered a sacrifice fly, bringing in the go-ahead run and giving Army a 2–1 advantage.
The Black Knights created additional chances in the middle innings, including a Taylor Brown single in the fifth, but the game remained close heading into the sixth.
Army then delivered its biggest offensive inning of the game in the sixth. Sigler reached again after being hit by a pitch, and Bonsignore followed with a single to set the table.
Sims came through with an RBI single, and moments later, Tepley delivered a clutch two-RBI hit, scoring two runs and extending the lead. Brown kept the rally going with a walk and a stolen base, and Ashton White added an RBI single to cap a four-run inning, pushing Army's lead to 6–1.
Rider responded in the bottom of the sixth, capitalizing on a mix of hits and defensive miscues to score three runs and cut the lead to 6–4, setting the stage for a tense final inning.
In the seventh, Army was unable to add insurance, and Rider mounted a decisive rally in the bottom half. After loading the bases with a combination of hits and an error, the Broncs tied the game with an RBI single. Moments later, Rider delivered the game's biggest swing, a grand slam to right field, turning a one-run deficit into a 9–6 loss for the Black Knights.
