Softball Clinches Series Win Over Lehigh in Saturday Doubleheader Sweep
April 11, 2026 | Softball
WEST POINT, N.Y. — Army West Point softball (21-20, 5-3) opened its third Patriot League series in 2026 on Saturday, hosting the Lehigh University Mountain Hawks (21-20, 3-8) for a doubleheader, claiming both 6-0 and 6-5 wins.
With the wins, the Black Knights clinch their second-straight regular season series win over the Mountain Hawks, the first time in program history that Black Knights have been able to accomplish the feat.
In game one, Army relied on dominant pitching and timely hitting throughout the lineup. Amanda Eaglin threw a complete-game shutout to secure a 6-0 win over Lehigh.
Army had an early cushion behind an aggressive offense and held on late behind strong pitching to secure a 6-5 win in game two over Lehigh, highlighted by a steady start from Katelyn Flanders and a clutch save from Breanna Izzo.
Sienna Tepley shined as the lead-off hitter for the Black Knights in both games, finishing with four hits and four runs with a .571 batting average, two stolen bases and one RBI.
Breanna Coonfare added three hits and a team-best .600 batting average while also adding an RBI. Hannah Laub had a team-high three RBIs, recording one hit and two sacrifice flies. Taylor Brown, Ashton White and Samantha Sims added two hits each, and Tayten Moore added one hit and two RBIs.
In the circle, Amanda Eaglin earned her eighth win of the season in game one, posting a complete game shutout, only allowing one hit and two walks while finishing with seven strikeouts. Opponents averaged a .043 hitting percentage against Eaglin.
Katelyn Flanders got the start in game two, earning a win while pitching 5.0 innings and allowing five runs, with only two earned runs, while also logging three strikeouts. Breanna Izzo came in relief and pitched for 2.0 innings, earning three strikeouts while only allowing one hit to earn her first save of 2026.
GAME 1
Eaglin set the tone immediately, striking out the side in the first inning and consistently keeping Lehigh off balance. She worked efficiently through all seven innings, scattering minimal baserunners and never allowing a serious scoring threat.
Army's offense backed her up right away in the bottom of the first. Sienna Tepley sparked the rally with a leadoff single, and Taylor Brown followed with a double to put two in scoring position.
After a walk loaded the bases, Hannah Laub delivered a sacrifice fly to bring home the first run, and a Lehigh error allowed a second run to score, giving Army an early 2-0 lead.
The Black Knights extended their advantage in the second with a string of productive at-bats.
Breanna Coonfare drove in a run with a single, Tepley added an RBI knock, and Ashton White capped the inning with another RBI single to make it 5-0. Aggressive baserunning, including stolen bases from Coonfare and Tepley, kept constant pressure on Lehigh's defense.
Army continued to manufacture runs in the fourth. Brown reached after being hit by a pitch, moved into scoring position, and later crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly from Caitlyn Newburn, pushing the lead to 6-0.
From there, Eaglin took full control. She worked around a few baserunners in the middle innings, aided by clean defensive plays and her ability to induce weak contact.
Lehigh managed just one hit through the first two innings and struggled to generate offense the rest of the way, as Eaglin mixed her pitches effectively and attacked hitters in every count. Her command was evident early and never wavered, as she finished off the shutout by retiring the final 10 batters she faced.
At the plate, Tepley led the way with multiple hits and an RBI, while Brown, White, and Coonfare each contributed key run-producing at-bats. Army finished with a balanced offensive effort, combining timely hitting, situational execution, and aggressive baserunning to support the shutout.
GAME 2
Army wasted no time taking control in the bottom of the first despite recording just one hit.
Sienna Tepley worked a leadoff walk, and the Black Knights loaded the bases with a mix of patience and pressure. Hannah Laub opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly, and Tayten Moore delivered the big swing with a two-RBI single.
Moore then swiped second, and Mia Bonsignore capped the inning by stealing home, giving Army a 4-0 lead while forcing Lehigh into mistakes.
The Black Knights continued to apply pressure in the second. Tepley and Taylor Brown reached with back-to-back hits, setting the table for Caitlyn Newburn, who lined an RBI single to right.
Laub followed with another run-scoring hit to extend the lead to 6-0. Army's offense combined timely hitting with aggressive baserunning, including multiple stolen bases, to keep Lehigh on its heels.
In the circle, Flanders was in control early, working efficiently through the first three innings. She induced weak contact and paired it with solid defense, allowing just one hit through the opening frames while keeping Lehigh scoreless into the fourth.
Even after Lehigh scratched across a run in the fourth, Flanders maintained composure and limited further damage.
Lehigh mounted its biggest challenge in the sixth, capitalizing on a leadoff home run and a string of hits and defensive miscues to pull within 6-5.
With momentum shifting, Army turned to Izzo out of the bullpen. She entered with runners on and immediately worked out of trouble, recording key outs to preserve the one-run lead.
Izzo then shut the door in the seventh, striking out two and inducing a groundout to retire the side in order and secure the save. Her poise under pressure halted Lehigh's comeback and ensured Army's early offensive burst held up.
At the plate, Tepley sparked multiple rallies, while Moore, Newburn, and Laub each delivered key RBIs in the decisive early innings. Army's ability to manufacture runs, draw walks, execute situational hitting, and take extra bases proved to be the difference.
