April 08, 2026 | Softball
WEST POINT, N.Y. — Army West Point softball (19-20) returned to the Army Softball Complex on Wednesday, earning a pair of wins over the Seton Hall Pirates (13-22), 8-4 and 6-1.
With the two wins, the Black Knights earn their first win against the Pirates since their 2-1 win in 2023, the last time the two teams faced off in West Point.
Katelyn Flanders shined in the circle for the Black Knights, finishing the day 2-0 with a 0.68 ERA over 10.1 innings pitched. Flanders went on to finish the day with 12 strikeouts while allowing one total earned run, with opposing hitters averaging a .198 batting average against her.
Sienna Tepley and Caitlyn Newburn finished with a team-high four hits, with Newburn batting a team-high .667 on the day. Ashton White finished right behind with three hits, adding a team-high five RBIs, all in game one, also setting a career-best.
Hannah Laub also added three hits on the day, and Mia Bonsignore added two. TaylorBrown, Samantha Sims, Tayten Moore, Emma Murchison and Maisi Sigler also each added a hit for the Army.
GAME 1
Seton Hall struck first in the opening inning, using a single, a hit batter, an RBI double and a sacrifice fly to take a 2–0 lead.
Army responded immediately in the bottom half. Sienna Tepley singled and later scored on Caitlyn Newburn's RBI single up the middle, trimming the deficit to 2–1 and setting the tone for the Black Knights' offense.
Army then broke the game open in the second inning with a five-run outburst. Mia Bonsignore reached to start the rally, and after a sacrifice bunt and a hit-by-pitch, Taylor Brown delivered a two-run single up the middle to give Army a 3–2 lead.
The biggest swing of the inning came next, when Ashton White blasted a three-run home run to left-center, scoring Brown and Sienna Tepley and stretching the advantage to 6–2. The Black Knights continued to apply pressure with walks and another single before the inning finally ended.
Seton Hall got one run back in the third, but Army answered again in the bottom half. After Micaela Garcia walked and Tepley followed with a bunt single, White came through once more, lining a two-run single to right field that scored both runners and pushed the Black Knights' lead to 8–3.
Army's offense was driven by its top of the order. White finished with a huge day at the plate, combining the three-run homer with a two-run single for five RBIs, while Tepley, Brown, Newburn, and Laub all helped keep pressure on Seton Hall's defense with timely hits and disciplined at-bats.
In the circle, Army got a strong effort after the early damage. Breanna Izzo settled in after the first inning and helped keep the Pirates from stringing together another big rally.
Seton Hall scored once in the fourth to make it 8–4, but Katelyn Flanders entered in relief and shut the door.
She ended the fourth with a strikeout, then dominated from there, striking out the side in the fifth and adding two more strikeouts in the sixth before closing out the win in the seventh.
GAME 2
Similar to the first game, Seton Hall struck first in the opening inning, using two hits and an RBI single to take a 1–0 lead, but Flanders quickly settled in. Even in the first, she limited further damage, stranding two runners and setting the tone for the rest of the game.
Army answered immediately in the bottom half. Sienna Tepley singled and stole second, while Taylor Brown walked and later stole second to put pressure on the defense. Caitlyn Newburn delivered an RBI single to tie the game, and Hannah Laub followed with a sacrifice fly to give Army a 2–1 lead.
Flanders began to take control from there. She struck out two in the second inning and worked around an error, then navigated traffic again in the third as Seton Hall put two on. Each time, she stayed composed, mixing strikeouts and weak contact to strand runners and preserve the lead.
Army broke the game open in the third inning with a decisive rally. Ashton White and Newburn recorded back-to-back singles, setting up Laub's RBI single to make it 3–1.
Moments later, Mia Bonsignore came through with a two-run single, extending the lead to 5–1 and giving Army separation.
From that point forward, it was Flanders in full command. She worked efficiently through the middle innings, highlighted by a strikeout to open the fourth, another key strikeout in the sixth, and consistent weak contact that kept Seton Hall off balance.
Army added an insurance run in the sixth, capitalizing on defensive miscues. After Breanna Coonfare reached and moved into scoring position, Tepley brought her home with an RBI groundout, pushing the lead to 6–1.
Flanders closed the game with poise in the seventh, working around two singles by inducing soft contact and recording the final out to seal the victory.
