Baseball Beats Navy in 13-Inning Classic
May 02, 2026 | Baseball
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Some epic battles have occurred in recent years between Army West Point Baseball and the Navy Midshipmen.
And just when it looks like the rivalry can't possibly write itself in another way, those who think so are proven wrong.
In Saturday's weekend series-opener between the Black Knights and host Navy at Max Bishop Stadium, both sides were within a frame a victory, but each time, the game continued in highly intense fashion.
But one side had to come away with the win, and ultimately, Army (27-17, 16-8) claimed Saturday's contest, 5-4 in a wild 13 innings.
Andrew Berg delivered a nine-inning masterclass, only failing to record the complete-game thanks the extra inning nature of Saturday's contest. The senior from Conroe, Texas struck out six batters, walking just one, allowing just one unearned run.
The final three innings played out like a roller coaster, with two-way phenom Josiah Overbeek entering to pitch in relief and bookending a two-run 11th with a pair of zeros before keeping the Mids off the board once more in the 13th to claim his fifth win of the year and move to 5-0 on the season.
The freshman had to strand a runner in scoring position in the 10th, before the Black Knights went to work offensively in the 11th. Paul Andrzejewski and Overbeek singled to lead off the frame, before Thomas Schreck walked with one out and William Parker doubled down the left field line to give Army a 4-2 lead.
But Navy rallied in the bottom of the inning, recording its own pair of singles to open the frame before an RBI groundout and two-out double made it 4-4.
Unrattled, Overbeek regrouped, and induced an inning-ending double play in the 12th to face the minimum. Then after Chris Barr doubled in the top of the 13th, Thomas Schreck recorded a sacrifice fly to shallow center field, allowing Andrzejewski to cross the plate on a gusty but high-reward send from third.
The Mids had one more chance to at least extend the game, but went down in order in the bottom of the inning.
Army moves back into a tie for first place in the Patriot League standings, with both the Black Knights and Bucknell sharing a 16-8 record in conference play. The final day of the regular season will decide the league's No. 1-seed, with Army holding the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Bison. Navy also trails both teams by just one game.
1,996 fans packed into the Annapolis ballpark to witness Saturday's rivalry contest. To the delight of the home team's supporters, Navy got on the board first in the bottom of the second, with a two-out RBI single to make it 1-0.
But the Black Knights would draw even a frame later to put the traveling fans on their feet, when Schreck went the other way to score Josiah Overbeek from second base and cap a two-out rally.
Navy took the lead in the bottom of the eighth with an unearned run, forcing Army to bat in the ninth down to its final outs.
But a pair of walks drawn, followed by an Andrzejewski RBI down the left field line, would tie the game at 2-2. After Berg worked around a runner in scoring position in the home half of the ninth, the rivals went to extra innings for the second time in the season series.
