May 02, 2026 | Softball
WORCESTER, Mass. — Army West Point softball (31-23, 11-6) opened and clinched its fourth regular season Patriot League series on Saturday, earning two run-run victories over the Holy Cross Crusaders (10-33, 4-13), 15-1 and 9-0.
In game one, the Black Knights delivered an offensive explosion backed by a dominant outing in the circle, rolling past Holy Cross 15–1.
Army controlled the game from start to finish in game two, combining aggressive offense with a dominant performance in the circle to secure a 9–0 shutout win over Holy Cross.
Three Black Knights finished the day with home runs: Tayten Moore, Ashton White and Samantha Sims.
First, Tayten Moore hit the first home run of her career, a grand slam, in the first inning of game one. She went on to finish the day with the lone hit plus a team-high five RBIs on the day.
Ashton White added her eleventh home run of the season in the fourth inning of game one, allowing her to break the Army softball single-season home run record. White finished the day with three runs, two hits, and four RBIs, with the four allowing White to set a new single-season and career RBI record.
Finally, Samatha Sims hit a three-run blast in the fourth inning of game two for the first home run of her collegiate career. Sims finished the day with four runs, four RBIs and two hits.
Sienna Tepley knocked a team-high three hits through the doubleheader, with Taylor Brown, Caitlyn Newburn and Hannah Laub also adding two hits each. Breanna Coonfare and Kendall Holloway also added hits while Nessa Andersen reached base for the first time in her collegiate career.
Katelyn Flanders started in the circle in game one, pitching for the complete game, only allowing one earned run with seven strikeouts for her eighth win of the season.
Amanda Eaglin pitched lights out in game two, only allowing one hit and two walks, earning six strikeouts in her complete game shutout against the Crusaders.
GAME 1
Army set the tone immediately at the top of the first.
After loading the bases with patience and aggressive baserunning from Taylor Brown and Ashton White, plus Hannah Laub reaching on a walk, Tayten Moore delivered the biggest swing of the day, a grand slam to left field, clearing the bases and giving Army a 4–0 lead despite just one hit in the inning.
In the bottom half of the first, Katelyn Flanders worked around early traffic, stranding three runners to keep Holy Cross off the board.
Army kept the pressure on in the second. Singles from Tepley and Brown set the table before White drove in two runs with a base hit, helping her set the single-season RBI record.
A bases-loaded walk by Hannah Laub forced in another, and Moore added a sacrifice fly RBI for her fifth RBI of the game, stretching the lead to 8–0. Flanders was dominant in the bottom half, recording two strikeouts in a clean inning.
The third inning was the only quiet frame offensively for Army, but Flanders continued to control the game, retiring the side in order and adding another strikeout to her line.
Army broke things wide open in the fourth. Brown reached, and White followed with a two-run home run to left center, allowing her to break the program record for career RBIs and the single-season home run record in just one swing.
The inning continued to unravel for Holy Cross as Newburn and Laub singled, an error brought in another run, and Makaila Moosbrugger drew a bases-loaded walk for an RBI. Brown capped the inning with a two-run single, as Army plated six runs to extend the lead to 14–0.
In the fifth, Army added one more run on a sacrifice fly from Mia Bonsignore, pushing the lead to 15–0.
Holy Cross managed just one run late, but Flanders remained in control throughout, finishing the game with seven strikeouts and earning the complete-game win.
GAME 2
Army threatened in the first with two walks but left runners stranded. In the bottom half, Amanda Eaglin immediately set the tone, striking out two batters as part of a scoreless opening inning.
Army broke through in the second. After Breanna Coonfare reached and moved into scoring position, a well-executed bunt play from Emma Murchison brought her home for the game's first run, giving Army a 1–0 lead.
The third inning was where Army blew the game open with a five-run rally built on pressure and execution.
It started with Caitlyn Newburn reaching on a single, followed by a walk from Hannah Laub to put two on. A bunt single from Coonfare loaded the bases and forced Holy Cross into a defensive scramble.
From there, Army capitalized on every opportunity. Samantha Sims put the ball in play, leading to a fielder's choice where a throwing error allowed the tying run to score. Murchison followed and reached on another error, bringing in another run as the defense continued to unravel.
With the pressure mounting, Sienna Tepley delivered the key hit of the inning, a two-run single up the middle, driving in Sims and Coonfare to extend the lead.
Army wasn't done yet. With runners still in motion, a wild pitch allowed Murchison to score, capping the inning.
In total, Army scored five runs on three hits, but more importantly, forced multiple defensive mistakes and executed small ball to perfection to take a commanding 6–0 lead.
Eaglin was dominant in the bottom of the third, recording three strikeouts in the inning, shutting down any chance of a response, and continuing to build momentum.
Army added to the lead in the fourth in a big way. After two runners reached, Samantha Sims delivered the biggest swing of the game, a three-run home run to right field, the first home run of her career, pushing the advantage to 9–0.
From there, Army managed the game efficiently. While the offense was held scoreless in the fifth, Eaglin continued to dominate in the circle, working through traffic and adding strikeouts to finish the job and clinch the 9-0 victory and series win.
