WEST POINT, N.Y. - Nick Tropeano and Brandon McNitt combined to toss a no-hitter as Stony Brook edged Army, 1-0, in a classic pitching duel at a sun-drenched and wind-swept Doubleday Field on Sunday afternoon.
Tropeano (4-1) struck out seven batters in six perfect innings of work, and McNitt worked the final three frames to earn his third save of the season.
Army starter Logan Lee (1-5) nearly matched Tropeano as the junior lefty allowed just one unearned run on five hits in seven innings. He struck out six and did not yield a walk during his outing.
Freshman righty Thomas Casey came out of the Army bullpen and worked two scoreless innings for the Black Knights. He equaled his career high with four strikeouts.
Stony Brook (12-5) scored the game's lone run in the top of the third inning as the Seawolves took advantage of a two-base error. Mike Hubbard singled up the middle with one out, and he moved to third base after Pat Cantwell's fly ball to right field was misplayed. Chad Marshall followed with a looping base hit that dunked into shallow center field to score Hubbard from third base. Lee was able to retire the next two batters to avoid further damage and keep Army within striking distance.
After being retired in order in the first eight innings, Army (6-12) caught a break in the ninth when Shaun Wixted reached on an error by the Stony Brook first baseman leading off the frame. Wixted moved to second base on Steve May's sacrifice bunt, but he was picked off by the Seawolves' catcher and got tagged out in a rundown after he ventured just a little too far from bag. David Darnell then grounded out to end the game.
Marshall went 2-for-2 at the plate to pace Stony Brook's five-hit attack.
Army and Stony Brook will conclude their abbreviated two-game series on Monday, March 28, when the two teams square off in a nine-inning game at Doubleday Field at 3:30 p.m.
