Baseball Scores Season-High 10, Sweeps Doubleheader
March 13, 2016 | Baseball
TAMPA, Fla. – The Army West Point baseball team reached double-digit runs for the first time in the 2016 campaign with a 10-3 victory over Massachusetts to sweep the Saturday's doubleheader at Tampa Jesuit High School.
The offense, which produced four players with multi-hits, was aided by a stellar performance on the mound from sophomore righty Matt Ball. After a shakey first inning that saw two Minutemen (0-5) cross the plate, the Charlotte, N.C., native settled in for a 90-pitch effort over seven innings. He scattered just three hits in that span while issuing one free pass and sitting down six. His performance was highlighted by having a stretch of nine batters that failed to reach base.
"He was just in control today," said head coach Matt Reid. "In college baseball, you've got to try to prevent to give the other team free-bees, and that's what we did in the first. Matt responded with a vengeance after that, though. He started working quick innings. He wasn't wasting any time. He would start you off with 0-1, then 0-2, then 1-2, then get you out."
Ball's performance was huge for Army (5-8), not only from his solid performance in the game, but also that he was able to preserve the bullpen by chewing up seven innings.
"We needed to save our bullpen that game because usually you like the seven-inning game to be the one where you preserve your bullpen, but we needed to use three guys," commented Reid.
After a rough first inning that saw UMass take an early 2-0 lead, the Black Knights responded by equaling that mark in the top of the second. Stu Schley battled through a full count to earn a free pass with one out before being sacrificed to second. Following Trey Martin taking one for the team and a wild pitch, sophomore catcher Keegan Vega looped a single down the right field line to tie the game.
"We did really well in the middle innings to put up some runs," Reid said. "I thought Keegan Vega had a big hit early on. He had two strikes on him and went the other way with a single for a pair of runs that gave us some really big momentum."
John McCarthy, the slugger from game one, gave Army the lead once again after his hustle led to a one-out infield single. After advancing to second on a wild pitch, the senior from Jupiter, Fla., scored on a throwing error by the second baseman to give the Black Knights a 3-2 lead.
McCarthy would add to his day en route to a two-for-three game two with a pair of RBIs and scoring three runs in the fifth with an RBI single that scored Kris Lindner. Stu Schley continued his success from the first game, smacking a double down the left field line to drive in two more Cadets.
The Minutemen had enough of McCarthy when he came up in the sixth inning as he was pitched around on four-straight pitches with the bases loaded. That move would not pay off as Jon Rosoff singled through the left side to plate Lindner for his second run of the game.
Rosoff added a couple more RBIs with a single in the eighth as well.
Army and Massachusetts will conclude their three-game series on Sunday, March 13, at 1 p.m. at Tampa Jesuit following day light savings time pushing the clocks ahead one hour.
