Walks, Long-ball Hinder Baseball against Hofstra
March 09, 2016 | Baseball
"You can't walk that many guys," said head coach Matt Reid. "We still had a chance at the end after walking all of those guys until the ninth. From an offensive standpoint, I thought Kris Lindner, John McCarthy and Jon Rosoff had some good at bats, as did some other guys, but we weren't as aggressive offensively as we needed to be."
Hofstra (4-7) utilized three big innings to push ahead of the Black Knights (3-8). The Pride put up five runs in the sixth and ninth innings, while adding three in the second.
The Black Knights opened the game by scored three runs in the bottom of the first. Trey Martin drove in the first run with a walk with the bases loaded and then Josh White reached on a fielder's choice, driving in McCarthy for the second run of the inning. Keegan Vega stepped to the plate and drove in the third Army run on a crazy bounce that got over the head of the third baseman, plating Rosoff for the third run.
Hofstra answered with a three-run blast from Mat Annunziata in the top of the second. Daniel Burggraaf walked the first two batters of the second and Annunziata stayed back on a 1-0 fastball and put it over the left field fence to tie the game at 3-3.
The Pride earned its first lead of the game in the top of the fifth inning with Vito Friscia lining a single to the right side, scoring David Leiderman, who reached on a walk earlier in the inning.
Teddy Cillis increased the lead to 5-3 in the sixth with a hard-hit triple past a diving David Monge in centerfield. The ball rolled all the way to the wall allowing Nick Bottari to score from first. Tom Archer was up next and drove in the second run of the inning with an RBI single with Cillis crossing the plate for the 6-3 lead. Archer then scored on a sacrifice fly by Brad Witkowski to push the advantage up to 7-3.
The Pride then loaded the bases with two outs and Annunziata came through again with a big hit with a two-run single to give him five RBI on the day and Hofstra led 9-3 after six innings.
After three perfect innings, John Rooney was relieved by Chris Bonk. Rooney struck out three, and was effective in getting Army to put the ball on the ground.
"Rooney shut us down in the middle innings," remarked Reid. "He is an outstanding pitcher."
The Black Knights answered in the bottom of the frame, reaching base for the first time since the three-run first. The inning started with a walk by McCarthy and a Rosoff single. White and Vega would go on to be hit by consecutive pitches, bringing in McCarthy for his second run of the day.
A bunt single by Lindner placed perfectly down the third baseline led off the home half of the seventh. A walk and hit batsman would advance the Morehead City, N.C., native 90-feet from scoring before a wild pitch brought him home. A single by Martin later in the inning brought in Justin Reece, cutting the deficit to three.
Lindner would once again circle the base paths, scoring his third run of the game the following inning after McCarthy's hustle forced Witkowski to rush the throw from short, bouncing it past Ryan Karl.
Two runs would be the closest that Army would come to tying the score, however, as a five-run ninth, sealed with a three-run blast from Bottari, would put the game out of reach for the Black Knights.
The Black Knights travel to Florida for their next eight games from March 12-19 from Tampa Jesuit High School and Jack Russell Memorial Stadium.
