Army Splits Patriot League Opener With Bucknell

WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army West Point baseball team split its doubleheader with Bucknell here Saturday during the Black Knights' Patriot League opening day.
The Cadets notched an 11-1 victory in the opener, before dropping a 2-0 decision in the nightcap.
Trey Martin and Jacob Hurtubise led the Black Knights in the twin bill with two hits each. Andre Walden registered a team-high four runs batted in, while Josh White chipped in two.
Tyler Giovinco was credited with the win in Game 1. The senior lefty allowed five hits, one walk and just one unearned run in the seven-inning complete game. He also managed to strike out six during his time.
Anthony LoRicco was tabbed with the loss in Army's second game of the day. The rookie gave up three hits, three walks, and two runs, one earned, in 4.0 innings on the mound.
ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
- Hurtubise, Walden, and White all touched home plate a team-best two times in the games.
- Walden drilled his team-leading third home run of the season in the opener.
- Hurtubise added to his season doubles total with two in the opener.
- John McKenna, Drake Titus and Brendan Siriani led the team with three walks.
- Harry Flannery Jr. pitched 5.0 solid relief innings in the nightcap, allowing just one walk. The sophomore fanned four during his time on the hill as well.
- Army tallied six extra base hits on the day, while Bucknell notched two.
- The Bison used six pitchers throughout the twin bill to only three for the Black Knights.
- The Cadets saw their visitors notch three double plays on the day.
How It Happened - Game 1
- Army started the scoring in the first with three runs on just one hit. Hurtubise and Titus both found themselves in scoring position with one out. Walden then stepped into the batter's box and drilled a shot to straight away center to clear the bases and hand the Black Knights a 3-0 edge.
- The Bison cut into the deficit at 3-1 in the top of the third when they scored an unearned run following an error with two outs.
- The Cadets quickly responded in a big way. Lead-off batter Walden started a rally that eventually brought home six runs. Jeremiah Adams, White and Hurtubise all doubled during the frame to register at least one RBI. McKenna earned Army's final run of the inning after recording an RBI bases loaded walk.
- The Black Knights tacked on two additional runs in the fourth to create an 11-1 gap between the teams. White led-off the frame being hit by a pitch. Martin then doubled to left center to bring him home from first. A few batters later Army found itself with runners on the corners with one out. During the next at bat Martin scored following an error on a failed pickoff attempt.
- The Cadets were then able to hold on down the stretch for their first conference win of the year.
How It Happened - Game 2
- The Bison scored the game's only two runs in the opening two frames. The visitor's notched back-to-back walks to lead off the game, before Army registered the first out. Unfortunately during the ensuing at bat the Bison tallied an RBI-single through the left side to score the inning's first run.
- One frame later Bucknell made it 2-0 when they reached base on a one-out error. The Bison then shifted two runners into scoring position when they recorded a double during the next play. Finally, a groundout to the shortstop scored their second and final run of the game.
FACTS & FIGURES
- The Black Knights posted 11 runs on eight hits, while Bucknell earned three runs on eight hits.
- Both teams were tagged with four errors on the day.
- The Cadets stranded 15 runners on base. Bucknell left 14.

- Army will host its service-academy rival Navy on Sunday for a twin bill.
- First pitch for Game 1 is scheduled for noon at Doubleday Field.
