Army Earns 30th Win In Regular Season Finale
May 09, 2019 | Baseball
WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army West Point baseball team registered its most runs since 2008 following a 23-11 rout of Villanova here Wednesday afternoon.
The Black Knights scored multiple runs in each of the opening six innings to put the game away early. Army's final runs total was its most since it defeated Sacred Heart 27-12 back in 2008.
Jacob Hurtubise swiped two bases in the game to tie the Patriot League all-time record with 99. He now needs just one more steal to surpass Bucknell's Ian Joseph (1998-01).
Six cadet-athletes registered at least two hits on the day, with Josh White earned a team-high three. Andre Walden led the Black Knights with five runs batted in, while White and Anthony Giachin chipped in four RBI apiece.
White closed out his day crossing home plate an impressive four teams to tie Hurtubise for a team-best.
Jacob Carte earned the win on the mound after allowing four hits, four runs, three earned and one walk in 3.0 innings.

How It Happened
- The Black Knights started the scoring early and never really looked back. Army put up five runs on four hits in the opening frame to take a 5-0 edge. Three of those runs came from one swing of the bat after White went yard.
- After the visitors recorded three runs back in the top of the second, Army quickly responded in the bottom half with another big frame to make it a 9-3 ballgame. Two of Army's four runs in the inning were brought home by Giachin's long ball.
- Again Villanova tried to cut into the deficit in the top of the third with three runs on three hits but the Black Knights wouldn't let them get any closer. Another two runs in the bottom half extended the Cadets' lead to 11-6 after three frames.
- The Black Knights then put up eight runs over the next two innings to increase their advantage to 19-6. Walden notched four of his five RBI during that stretch, including a bases clearing triple in the fourth.
- Both teams plated three runs in the sixth to make the score 22-9. Cerruto had the big hit for the Black Knights in that inning when he recorded Army's fourth-straight hit of the frame to bring home Jeremiah Adams and White.
- Despite Villanova outscoring the Cadets 2-1 throughout the final three innings, Army was able to hold on for the multi-run victory.
