Baseball Downed by Ohio State in High-Scoring Battle
March 06, 2022 | Baseball
After trading the lead throughout the first half of the game, a seven-run eighth inning helped lift the Buckeyes (4-7) past the Black Knights (2-7). Sean Dennehy took the loss, moving him to 1-1 on the year. The southpaw was one of four arms that pitched for the Cadets, and all but right-handed reliever Trevor Finan were tagged with at least one earned run.
Offensively, Army was led by Ross Friedrick, who went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Both Nick Manesis and Carter Macias also chipped in a pair of hits apiece, while Cam Cerruto led the team with two RBI.
Following two scoreless innings, each team put up a trio of runs in the third to set the game at 3-3. The Buckeyes continued to score over the next two frames, jumping out to their first lead of the day at 5-3.
The Black Knights' offense struggled to respond initially, putting up zeros until the seventh inning when Sam Ruta, who drew a leadoff walk, scored on Friedrick's RBI double. Though a Buckeye error allowed the go-ahead run to reach, the best the Cadets could do was tie up the score at 5-5 as Cerruto's sac fly drove in Friedrick.
Finan successfully limited Ohio State's bats in the bottom of the seventh, holding them to zero runs for the first time in three frames. Army took advantage of the momentum generated by its pitching and regained the lead once again in the eighth when Kevin Dubrule's sac bunt plated Bennett Smith. Before the end of the frame, Hunter Meade added an insurance run when he scored on another error, awarding the team a 7-5 advantage.
Ultimately, Army was unable to hold off the Buckeyes as they stormed back with their seven-run effort in the bottom of the frame. Ohio State cranked out two home runs while capitalizing on a pair of Cadet errors to claim its final margin of victory in a game that saw nine combined miscues between the two sides.
Coach's Corner
"Tough loss today, but the guys are playing hard. I know they will come back stronger after games like this, that's what we do. We need to be patient and let these young arms develop because I know they will come around. We are looking forward to playing our first midweek games this week." – Head Coach Jim Foster
What's Next
Army's spring break trip will continue with a pair of games at UT Arlington on Tuesday, March 8 and Wednesday, March 9. Both games at Clay Gould Ballpark are slated for a 7:30 p.m. EST first pitch.
