April 23, 2024 | Baseball
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army West Point Baseball leaned on a methodical offensive output, efficient pitching and stellar defense as it knocked off Hudson Valley foe Marist 6-1, at Doubleday Field on Tuesday.
Army's infield turned six double plays. Three twin killings came in each of the opening three frames. Sam Ruta also snagged a pair of line drives at third base, each time tossing to first for the second out. In the seventh inning, a turned double play left the bases loaded and ended a Marist threat with no damage. The Red Foxes scored their only run of the game in the ninth as Army turned its sixth double play.
The club improved to 23-17 and have won eight of its past 10.
The Black Knights scored in four of the first five innings, with trio of one-run innings.
A double steal put Army on the scoreboard in the opening stanza, as Derek Berg crossed the plate. Thomas Schreck beat out a double play in the second, scoring Addison Ainsworth to make it 2-0.
Schreck got back into the RBI column in the fourth, on a single to center field. Army then knocked the Red Foxes for three runs in the fifth, via a Ruta double and an Ethan Ellis two-run single.
Starting pitcher Steven Graver went 3.2 innings, inducing a trio of double plays. Mark Abell earned the win with a career-high 2.1 innings pitched in relief of Graver. Joel Rubin, Dom Trippi and Trey Ates combined for the final three innings pitched.
