Home Runs, Ronnebaum’s Six Innings Power Baseball to Win Friday
April 05, 2024 | Baseball
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Three early home runs put Army in the lead against the Holy Cross Crusaders, but it was Matthew Ronnebaum's six shutout innings which made the difference in the Black Knights' 5-3 win Friday.
In what was the team's first Patriot League affair at Doubleday Field, Ronnebaum struck out four batters and earned his second win of the season.
Army (15-13, 6-2 Patriot League) ignited the offense in the opening inning, with a three-run home run off William Parker's bat to straightaway center.
Two innings later, Derek Berg joined Parker by hitting a solo home run to deep left, before Parker had his second homer with a line drive down the third base line.
Multiple times Friday, the Black Knight pitching escaped jams. Ronnebaum stranded a pair of runners in the first inning. And in the second and sixth innings, pairs of base hits to open the inning were successfully worked around without damage.
But Holy Cross would break through in the eighth, plating three runs, each with two outs, and cutting the Black Knight lead to two.
After allowing one of the earned runs in the eighth, Trey Ates would shut the door in the ninth, recording the final three outs in order.
By the Numbers
4: Parker had four RBIs, all on home runs, while going 2-for-3 with a walk Friday.
7: Seven Black Knights each had at least one base knock.
3: Rubin (1.0 IP) and Ates (2.0 IP) combined for a trio of strikeouts out of the bullpen.
Black Knight Notes
Ronnebaum returned to a starting role after two consecutive relief appearances. The Overland Park, Kan. native has eight total outings on the season, with six starts. It was also his first start to open a series since the season's second week.
The matchup was Ronnebaum's third quality start, previously pitching a seven-inning complete game in a win over Air Force March 2 in Sugar Land, Texas.
Army's starting pitching has gone five innings or longer in all but one Patriot League game.
Parker's multi-homer game is the third among Black Knights this season. He also reached base safely for the 26th consecutive game.
Next Up
Army will face Holy Cross Saturday in a doubleheader, with Game 1 starting at 12:00 p.m. Both games will be seven innings.
