Baseball Swept in Doubleheader
April 06, 2024 | Baseball
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army West Point Baseball struggled to find consistency on offense in Saturday's doubleheader against Holy Cross, and found themselves on the short end of both games Saturday at Doubleday Field.
Even in defeat, the Black Knight pitchers combined for just five runs allowed in the pair of seven inning games.
Game 1
Justin Lehman had a career-high nine strikeouts in the opening matchup Saturday, but the Black Knight bats mustered just three hits as the squad fell 2-1.
After going behind by a pair of runs in the first, Army did not surrender another run in the contest. Braden Golinski homered to straightaway center field in the fifth to get the home team within one run, but the Black Knights ran out of outs in the seventh with the tying run at first base.
Joe Valchar tossed a scoreless seventh inning out of the bullpen, with two punchouts. Derek Berg and Coleson Titus registered base hits in the game.
Game 2
Mike Ruggieri gave Army five innings and allowed just two runs in his Game 2 start. But in spite of his four strikeouts, the Black Knights once again couldn't generate enough timely hitting, and fell 3-2.
Andrew Berg recorded a pair of strikeouts in his two relief frames, but allowed the go-ahead run to score in the sixth and absorbed the decision.
Holy Cross scored a run in both the first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead.
Army answered with Golinski's second home run of the day to make it 2-1 in the fourth. A Derek Berg RBI singled evened the contest in the fifth.
