January 24, 2025 | Hockey
MOON TOWNSHIP, PA - Army West Point hockey (10-15-0, 10-8-0 Atlantic Hockey America) extended its winning streak to five games with a 6-3 victory over the Robert Morris Colonials (9-12-3, 6-8-2 Atlantic Hockey America) on Friday night in game one of the series
Hunter McCoy had his first career multi-goal effort to propel the Black Knights, with Brent Keefer, Adam Marshall, Barron Woodring and Jack Ivey also finding the back of the net. Army led 4-2 through 30 minutes of action and nursed its lead until the Colonials made it a one-goal affair with just over six minutes remaining before Woodring scored on the power-play to put the game to rest before an empty netter from Ivey.
JJ Cataldo continued his strong play in net for the Black Knights, making 32 saves for his fifth straight win in net.
After killing off a pair of early penalties, Army notched the first goal of the contest as Brent Keefer fired in a shot from the left circle into the top right corner for his sixth tally of the season off an assist from Vincent Salice.
The goal came with 2:22 to play in the frame as Army took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
The goals came early and often in the second, with Army scoring twice within 35 seconds beginning with an Adam Marshall goal exactly two minutes in. Marshall intercepted an errant pass in the RMU defensive zone and tucked home his sixth of the campaign to give Army a 2-0 lead.
Two became three right after, as Hunter McCoy collected Army's third of the game from a tight angle as the Colonials goaltender was beat and then pulled from the game with the two quickfire goals to start the period.
After Robert Morris made it a 3-1 game just after, McCoy once again took a feed from Nik Hong and slotted home to restore the three-goal lead for the road side just over eight minutes into the frame.
Robert Morris continued to battle back, making it a 4-2 contest with a goal less than a minute later as Michael Craig scored at even strength. The team's locked in defensively and went into the third period with the score standing at 4-2.
Army held strong throughout the third until Michael Felsing broke through past Cataldo to make it a 4-3 game with 6:22 to play. Army took a penalty just six seconds after the goal to give Robert Morris more life, but a key save from Cataldo helped Army notch its fourth penalty kill of the night.
Army then found itself on the power-play in the closing minutes, as Woodring ensured the three points for the Black Knights with his sixth score of the season, cleaning up on the doorstep after a centering pass from Jack Ivey.
With under 15 seconds remaining, Ivey then notched the empty net goal making it five straight games with a goal from the plebe.
Army was outshot 35-26 in the game but never trailed as Cataldo continued to make nothing easy for the opposition.
Joey Baez and Nik Hong added two assists each as Michael Sacco blocked a game-high four shots while skating to a plus-two rating.
The teams will return for game two on Saturday with puck drop set for 5:00 p.m.
