Hockey Ties with Canisius in Buffalo, Falls 2-0 in Shootout
November 01, 2025 | Hockey
BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Black Knights drew their second tie of the season as Army West Point hockey (3-2-2, 1-2-1 Atlantic Hockey America) traveled to Buffalo to take on the Canisius Golden Griffins (5-4-1, 1-2-1 Atlantic Hockey America) at the LECOM Harborcenter on Saturday night.
Army struck first with a quick shot from Jude Brower and after the Golden Griffins drew even midway through the second period, Jack Ivey took the Black Knights back into a 2-1 lead. Canisius brought things even at 2-2 in the third period and after a scoreless overtime the Black Knights fell 2-0 in the shootout.
Sophomore JJ Cataldo stood between the pipes for Army, tallying 23 saves against 25 shots on goal.
The Golden Griffins posted Chase Clark in goal where he recorded 31 saves against Army's 33 shots on goal.
The Black Knights were aggressive offensively from the jump as Vincent Salice recorded the first shot of the game just 64 seconds into the action. The Black Knights hammered the Canisius defense throughout the first period, putting up 10 shots on goal in the first 20 minutes to the Golden Griffins' three.
Despite Army's offensive pressure in the first period, the scoreboard remained empty until the second period when Jude Brower scored his third goal of the season as he slipped past the Canisius defense to fire a shot straight past Clark only 40 seconds into the second period.
The two teams traded blows as the second period play continued and the Griffs drew even shortly after the mid-point of the period. Almost exactly three minutes later, Jack Ivey put Army back in the lead with a power play goal on a set up from fellow sophomores Nils Forselius and Ben Ivey.
Canisius continued to search for a way to rein in the Black Knights and they found it nearly 14 minutes into the third period, scoring their second goal in regulation to bring the game tied at 2-2. Army pressed its luck once more as the clock ticked down, but the Griffs held the Black Knights off to send the game into overtime.
The two teams battled hard through the five-minute overtime period with a barrage of shots from Canisius, but the 2-2 tie held through the final whistle to advance the game to a shootout where the Griffs snuck two goals past Cataldo while Clark stood tall in goal for the Griffs.
Army controlled the momentum for the majority of the game, tallying 33 shots as a team compared to Canisius' 25.
The Black Knights edged ahead in the faceoff battle with 30 faceoff wins to the Griffs' 29, led by Army's Barron Woodring with 13 faceoff wins.
Army's defense was strong around Cataldo, putting up 12 blocks to Canisius' six with two each for Liam Chapman, Vincent Salice, and Sam Groebner.
