Hockey Ties 3-3 at Bentley, Forselius Nets Shootout Winner
November 08, 2025 | Hockey
WALTHAM, Mass. – Army West Point hockey (3-2-3, 1-2-2 Atlantic Hockey America) picked up its third tie of the season in a back-and-forth contest at Bentley (4-3-1, 4-0-1 Atlantic Hockey America) and earned its second shootout win of the season as Nils Forselius found the back of the net in the fourth round.
The Falcons struck first before Army took a 2-1 lead to begin the second period. Bentley scored two of their own to take a 3-2 lead before a third Army goal brought things to a 3-3 tie that held through the final whistle and through the overtime period to send the game into a shootout.
The two goalies were stalwart in goal throughout the shootout, which remained at 0-0 through the first three rounds before Nils Forselius scored for Army in the fourth round to give the Black Knights the 1-0 shootout win.
JJ Cataldo stood in goal for Army where the sophomore netminder tallied 36 saves against 39 shots for a .923 save percentage.
Nicholas Bevilacqua appeared between the pipes for the Falcons, recording 28 saves against Army's 31 shots on goal.
Army controlled the puck in the first period, putting up 15 shots on goal to Bentley's five, but the home ice advantage played in the Falcons' favor as the home team scored with two and a half minutes remaining in the first frame.
The Black Knights did not fold against the pressure as Nils Forselius scored his first goal of the season on the power play with 35 seconds left on the clock to bring things tied at 1-1 heading into the break.
Easton Zueger gave Army a 2-1 lead just shy of five minutes back into the action as he held the puck in the left-hand faceoff circle and slipped the shot past Bevilacqua and the Bentley defense.
The Falcons returned Army's favor with a last-second power play goal to tie the game at two heading into the second intermission before responding to Army's challenge once again and scoring a power play goal four and a half minutes into the third period to retake the lead.
Army's power play prowess reared its head, however, and a back-and-forth set of passes between Forselius and Jack Ivey set up Barron Woodring for the chip in on the doorstep to tie the game at three mid-way through the third period.
Despite a flurry of shots from both teams, the stalemate held through not only the final whistle of regulation, but the end of the overtime period as well as Cataldo stood tall in front of a barrage of Bentley shots during the extra time.
Vincent Salice, Dylan Wegner, and Barron Woodring all skated out to center ice to try their hand at the shootout, but it was Nils Forselius who would find the back of the net once more at Bentley Arena to give Army the extra point in the Friday night matchup.
Bentley led the contest in total shots on goal with 39 to Army's 31, but the Black Knights were efficient in their work to earn a .097 shots percentage compared to the Falcons' .077 shots percentage.
Cataldo's 36-save performance marks his fourth game this season with at least 30 saves to his name while Army improves to a 2.3 goals-against average so far this season.
Three Black Knights put up multi-point nights as Forselius, Woodring, and Jack Ivey all left Waltham with two points.
The tie brings Army to a 38-37-16 all-time record against the Falcons with the next installment of the all-time series that dates back to 1981 set for two days' time.
