March 14, 2025 | Hockey
WORCESTER, MA – Fifth-seeded Army West Point hockey (16-19-2, 14-10-2 Atlantic Hockey America) fell 3-2 in overtime to top-seeded Holy Cross (23-13-2, 19-5-2 Atlantic Hockey America) in game one of the AHA Semifinal on Friday night from the Hart Center.
Holy Cross scored the game-winner 3:15 into the overtime frame, snapping Army's six-game winning streak in games that have gone beyond 60 minutes.
Mac Gadowsky and Barron Woodring netted goals for the Black Knights while JJ Cataldo made 36 saves in goal for Army.
Thomas Gale made a season-high 45 saves in net for the Crusaders as Army outshot Holy Cross in every period but was unable to find the go-ahead goal after tying the game at two midway through the second frame.
The Crusaders had a fast start as it took just 1:49 to get on the scoresheet with Matthew Kursonis scoring his eighth of the season.
Army responded at the 14:43 mark of the period through Mac Gadowsky who deposited his fourth goal in as many games in the postseason. Michael Sacco won a faceoff to Joey Baez who fired a shot to the left pad of Gale and Gadowsky was there to collect the rebound and fire his 16th of the season.
Holy Cross got the first power play of the game with three minutes to go in the first and quickly capitalized as Liam McLinskey made the play to Devin Phillips for tap-in at the doorstep. Army trailed 2-1 at the first intermission.
Midway through the second period, Army had its biggest opportunity of the game, going to a five-on-three advantage for 84 seconds of gametime, eventually converting through Woodring who scored off the back of Gale with assists from Gadowsky and Jack Ivey.
The Crusaders took a penalty with the goal, giving Army another extended look while two men-up, but Holy Cross was able to kill off the remaining time. Army continued to outshoot the Crusaders, 15-12 in the second frame, as the teams went into the second intermission knotted at two.
With the next goal looming large, Army seemingly had it as Vincent Salice slammed home a loose puck on the doorstep, but following a Holy Cross challenge, the goal was deemed offside.
Gale made save after save down the stretch, forcing the contest into overtime, marking the fourth overtime contest in five games for the Black Knights.
Army's stretch of overtime wins was put to rest as Phillips scored the game-winner just over three minutes in, as Brody Gagno made an excellent stretch pass to Jack Stockfish who then laid off to Phillips who made no mistake with the game on his stick.
The two teams will meet again for game two on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. from the Hart Center.
