Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader at Lafayette
March 22, 2025 | Baseball
EASTON, Pa. – Army West Point Baseball come from behind in the late innings of both games at the Lafayette Leopards on Saturday, sweeping a doubleheader and moving to 3-2 in Patriot League play.
It was the second-to-last inning of the daycap which propelled the Black Knights to a win, while ninth inning fireworks secured a twin bill sweep for Army, who remain in the Lehigh Valley for two games Sunday.
Parker hit two clutch home runs in Saturday's doubleheader, with both homers giving Army its late leads.
With the wins, the Black Knights have won three games in a row and four of their past five.
Game 1
A William Parker home run and a Robbie Penswick save were the differences in Game 1 as Army defeated the Leopards, 4-3.
Despite being doubled in hits, 12-6, the Black Knights were able to strand 13 Lafayette baserunners across the seven-inning contest, and left just one of their own on the basepaths.
Starting pitcher Justin Lehman never pitched with a lead Saturday, but was credited with the win, and moved to 2-2 on the season, as he was still the pitcher of record when Army took the lead in the sixth inning.
Down 3-1 in the penultimate inning, Addison Ainsworth kept the frame alive for Army with a two-out RBI single to score Mark Abell and cut the deficit to one run. Parker would record his second two-run homer of the season an at-bat later to put the team in front for good.
The come-from-behind win came after Lafayette tagged Lehman for two first inning runs and another in the fifth. Thomas Schreck recorded an RBI single in the third inning to keep the Black Knights within arms' length.
Lehman struck out two batters across his five-inning start. Joe Valchar faced two batters in relief in the sixth before head coach Chris Tracz handed the ball to Penswick, who notched his third save this year.
Game 2
What looked to be a routine game late Saturday proved anything but, as the sides combined for 13 runs over the final three innings and 11 across the last two.
However, when the final out was recorded, Army was on the winning side of a 15-11 decision.
The Black Knights scored five runs in the top of the ninth, retaking a multi-run lead after going into the bottom of the eighth up 10-5.
Trey Ates, who entered the contest in the eighth, recorded the final four outs of the game, pitched a scoreless ninth inning and earned the win.
Thomas Schreck singled to lead off the ninth, setting up the top of the order for Chris Barr, who walked.
That set up a three-run homer for Parker and the Black Knights never looked back. In fact, the team added to its lead with a two-run home run from Jack Quinlan two at-bats later.
The finish was just as fast as the start for Army. Parker opened the nightcap's scoring with a first inning RBI single. Schreck then logged a sacrifice fly an inning later.
In the third, Lehman and Colson Titus each drove in runs with a double, before Mark Abell made it 5-0 with an RBI single.
After the Leopards made it 5-2, Titus registered his second RBI of the afternoon in the fifth and Schreck followed suit later in the frame to put Army ahead by five once more.
Ainsworth crossed the plate in the sixth before the third out was recorded in a rundown to plate another run, and Barr tripled in the seventh to re-extend the lead.
By the Numbers
4-for-7: Titus was 4-or-7 across both games, including a 3-for-5 line in the nightcap.
2-for-3: Ainsworth was 2-for-3 in Game 1.
17: The Black Knights logged a season-high 17 hits in the nightcap.
12: Army pitchers struck out 12 Lafayette batters in Game 2, the most in a game this season.
Black Knight Notes
In both games, Army's come-from-behind wins represented the latest the team took a lead in a game it has won to date this season. The ninth inning lead change was the first in a win for Army in 2025.
The Black Knights committed no errors in a game for the fifth time this year in Game 2.
Army swept a regular season doubleheader for the first time since April 14, 2024, also at Lafayette.
Berg pitched seven innings or longer for his second consecutive start, after pitching 8.1 innings at Navy March 15. It was also the second time in as many appearances the junior tied or set a career-high in strikeouts.
