Baseball Takes Saturday Matchup at Queens to Clinch Series Win
February 28, 2026 | Baseball
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Army West Point baseball held on Saturday to defeat the Queens Royals 4-3 and clinch the series win, ahead of the teams' series finale on Sunday.
The Black Knights held off a Royal rally late at The Stick Williams Dream Fields, escaping a major jam in the eighth and finishing the job in the ninth for their second straight one-run win after previously defeating Queens 3-2 on Friday night.
Starting pitcher Andrew Berg provided seven innings and struck out four batters, allowing three runs, two earned. Berg did leave the game with Queens threatening after a two-run triple cut the Army lead to 4-3, and with runners on the corners with nobody out. Still, his quality start earned him a win, his second on the year to move to 2-0.
Placed in a difficult spot in relief, Robbie Penswick recorded a strikeout and induced a double play in the eighth, to retire the Queens side and keep the Black Knights in front. An inning later, the tying run reached first base, but Penswick—making his first relief appearance of 2026—recorded all three outs and claimed the save, his first of the season and Army's second.
Army moves to 4-4 with the win. With the third week of the season underway, it's the Black Knights' second winning weekend of 2026 and their first series win over a single team this season.
The game got off to a very familiar start for both teams. For the second day in a row, the Royals scored a run in the bottom of the first. And also for the second day in a row, Josiah Overbeek tied the game in the top of the second with a solo home run.
Army took the lead in the fourth, once again off the bat of Overbeek, with an RBI single to score David Dubrule from second base.
In the seventh, Army doubled its lead with a two-out RBI single, before a David Dubrule RBI double scored Chris Barr in the eighth to make it 4-1.
By the Numbers
2-for-4: Overbeek was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.
.308: Army hit .308 with runners on base Saturday, compared to .118 for Queens.
Black Knight Notes
Overbeek made his first career start in the field on Saturday, at left field. He had previously made four starts as the designed hitter.
Parker started at right field for the first time since April 12, 2023 vs. Sacred Heart. Saturday also marked the first time since that game that Parker started at a position other than left field or DH. Parker would move back to left in the ninth however, with Zac Farrell sliding into right field as a defensive sub.
Berg's seven innings pitched Saturday represented a season-long outing for him, after pitching 6.1 innings in each of his first two appearances to date in 2026.
An error was charged to Army in the seventh inning, ending the Black Knights' run of 53 consecutive innings without an error dating back to February 14, Army's second game of the season. Despite the error, no runs were allowed in the seventh.
Next Up
The series finale is set for tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. from The Stick Williams Dream Fields, with Army seeking a series sweep. QUSN will stream the game.
