Baseball Drops Series Opener to Holy Cross
March 13, 2026 | Baseball
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army West Point baseball got five scoreless innings from relief pitcher Anthony Ramirez, but couldn't overcome an early sizable deficit and took a 6-1 loss in its three-game series opener vs. Holy Cross at Doubleday Field.Â
Â
For Army (6-9, 0-1), four of its six runs allowed were unearned. The Crusaders plated a trio of unearned runs in the second and another three runs in the fourth, rendering the Black Knights' fifth inning run insufficient in any attempt to come back Friday.Â
Â
Andrew Berg took the decision for Army to move to 2-1 on the year. The senior struck out three Crusaders, but one of those strikeouts ended up as a passed ball which saw the batter advance to first base. A bases loaded walk three at bats later got Holy Cross on the board, before a rare two-run fielder's choice made it 3-0 later in the inning.Â
Â
Two innings later, RBIs from Holy Cross' Braden Connors made it 5-0 in the fourth, and an E5 made it 6-0 two at bats later.Â
Â
Addison Ainsworth led off the fifth with a double before Chris Barr brought him in with an RBI single. An inning later, the Black Knights left runners on the corners, and had their leadoff hitter reach in both of the final two innings, but would run out of outs before another run crossed the plate.Â
Â
Ramirez was effective for Army out of the bullpen, entering in the fifth inning and retiring all but two batters faced. He recorded a perfect fifth, sixth and seventh inning on Friday, finishing one batter short of the minimum.Â
Â
By the Numbers
Â
2-for-5: Ainsworth and Barr were each 2-for-5 at the plate.Â
Â
3: Army's three doubles Friday represented a season-high.Â
Â
Black Knight Notes
Â
Ainsworth hit in the leadoff spot for the first time since the front of an April 6 doubleheader at Holy Cross last year.
Â
William Parker hit cleanup for the first time since March 7 at Fordham in 2025, which was also his first game back from 2024-25 offseason Tommy John Surgery.Â
