Baseball Dispatches Cornell in Midweek Test
March 31, 2026 | Baseball
Â
Army (15-11) has won eight of its past nine games, scoring 10 or more runs in five of those contests.Â
Â
Max Donecea picked up the second win of his plebe season in relief while striking out three, and Michael Delph recorded his first career save after entering with two outs in the seventh and the tying run on deck.
Â
Starting pitcher Mark Abell went 1.2 innings with three strikeouts before Donecea's 2.1 inning appearance. Walker Calvo pitched 2.1 innings before Delph recorded the final eight outs Tuesday.
Â
After Cornell took an early lead on a solo home in the top of the first, Army responded with four of its own in the bottom half of the inning. John McKillop was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, Addison Ainsworth drew a walk with the bases loaded and Zac Farrell beat out a double play to pick up the RBI, before Max McGlone singled down the third base line to bring home McKillop on a line drive that hit the third base bag.
Â
A pair of unearned runs brought the Big Red within 4-3 in the second, but Army got those runs back in the third on a McGlone RBI fielder's choice and a Chris Barr sacrifice fly that just missed leaving the yard.
Â
Cornell would get back within one run in the fourth, but once again, the Black Knights countered to pull back ahead. Thomas Schreck poked an opposite field single to score Josiah Overbeek, before Mason Scott plated two runs with two outs to make it 9-5.
Â
Zac Farrell added to Army's lead two innings later on an RBI double down the line, before crossing the plate later in the frame on Barr's second sacrifice fly of the day.
Â
The Big Red cut into Army's lead by a run in the top of seventh, but the Black Knights restored its six-run lead with a two-out RBI double from Ainsworth in the home half of the stanza.
Â
By the Numbers
Â
9: Army stole nine total bases Tuesday. More stolen bases have not been recorded in a single game by the Black Knights since stealing 10 on May 6, 2019 at Lafayette.Â
Â
4: McKillop's four runs Tuesday were the most by an Army player in a single game this year.
Â
3: Overbeek—the Patriot League's leader in walks—drew four free passes Tuesday, one of which by a hit by pitch.Â
Â
2: Barr, Ainsworth, Farrell, McGlone and Scott each recorded two-RBI afternoons, with Scott collecting his first career multi-RBI game.Â
Â
2: Farrell was 2-for-4 Tuesday and McGlone was 2-for-5.
Â
Black Knight Notes
Â
From 1948 to 1992, the Black Knights and the Big Red were in the Eastern Intercollegiate Baseball League (EIBL) together. That conference was made up of the Ivy League schools plus Army and Navy. After 1992, Army and Navy joined the Patriot League, and the Ivy League began sponsoring baseball. The teams' first meeting took place at West Point in 1899, a 9-0 Cornell win.
Â
Army had more runs (12) than hits (11) Tuesday for the fifth time this season. The Black Knights' 12 runs matches their season-high in runs scored set vs. UAlbany on March 18.Â
Â
Schreck hit cleanup on Tuesday for the first time in his career.
Â
David Dubrule came off the bench to play second base in the ninth inning; the first time he's played the position to date this year.Â
Â
Overbeek has reached safely in each of his 24 games played this year.
Â
Next Up
Â
Army jumps back into conference play with a three-game road series at Holy Cross on April 4-5, the beginning of an eight-game road swing. The Black Knights are back in action at home vs. Wagner on April 14.
