Overbeek, Ates Shine as Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader vs. Bucknell
April 18, 2026 | Baseball
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Josiah Overbeek hit two home runs and recorded a pitching win, and Trey Ates pitched Army West Point baseball's first nine-inning complete game in two years as the Black Knights swept their Saturday doubleheader over Bucknell with 2-1 and 5-1 wins.Â
Â
Army (22-15, 12-7 PL) secures the four-game series win over the Bison with one game left to play in the set. The Black Knights have won four games in a row and seven of their past eight.
Â
Game One
Â
Scheduled for seven innings, the Black Knights saw the daycap go eight, with a walk-off base knock from Carter Hewitt proving decisive in their 2-1 win.Â
Â
Looking for its first run since taking a 1-0 lead in the third, Chris Barr reached on an error to lead off the frame before William Parker was intentionally walked and John McKillop loaded the bases with a pinch-hit, infield single. '
Â
Then, with a full count and a ball away from victory, Hewitt instead poked the payoff pitch to right for the opposite field single to secure the front end of the twin bill.
Â
After giving Army the lead in the third with a solo home run to break the freshman home run record, Overbeek came on to pitch in the sixth, inheriting runners on first and second with nobody out. While Overbeek did allow a game-tying RBI double, the run was not credited to him and he limited the damage to just that run, stranding a pair of runners in scoring position.Â
Â
The Weatherford, Texas native moved to 2-0 on the year, retiring the Bison in order in the seventh and allowing no runs in the eighth to set up Hewitt's walk-off.
Â
Starting pitcher Kevin Reavey pitched five frames and exited the game in line for the win. Striking out three and allowing just six baserunners, he induced a double play to escape the fifth inning scoreless after loading the bases with just one out. Anthony Ramirez also logged a two-batter relief appearance before Overbeek came on.
Â
Game Two
Â
Trey Ates pitched the team's third complete game of the season in Saturday's nightcap, and the only one so far in 2026 lasting nine innings.
Â
Both his innings pitched total and his eight strikeouts were new career-highs. The Dallas, Texas native threw 121 pitches, the second-most in his career behind only his 129 vs. Navy on March 29. After surrendering his sole run allowed in the fifth, Ates went his final 16 batters faced without giving up a hit.
Â
Like in game one, Army never trailed in the contest. Thomas Schreck opened the scoring in the third with a two-out RBI single to score David Dubrule, before Chris Barr scored on a wild pitch an at bat later.
Â
After Bucknell got within one run in the fifth, Overbeek launched his second homer of the day, a two-run home run on an arc to right field which gave Army a 4-1 lead.
Â
Jack Quinlan extended Army's lead to 5-1 an inning later, a score which held through the final out.
Â
Ates retired each of his final nine batters faced from the seventh inning onwards, recording a perfect eighth and ninth inning, having also collected a perfect fourth earlier in the contest.
Â
By the Numbers
Â
2-for-3: After walking twice in the opening game, Quinlan went 2-for-3 in the nightcap.
Â
2-for-4: Hewitt was 2-for-4 in the daycap and finished 3-for-7 overall in the twin bill.Â
Â
14: Army's pitching combined for 14 total strikeouts over the two games.Â
Â
11: The Bison produced just 11 total hits in Saturday's doubleheader.
Â
Black Knight Notes
Â
Overbeek broke the freshman record of 10 home runs set by Cole White in 2005 and now stands at 12 home runs on the season.
Â
Ates' nine-inning complete-game was the first by a Black Knight since Justin Lehman vs. Navy on April 26, 2024. His eight strikeouts also tied Kevin Reavey's mark set vs. Holy Cross on March 14 for most by a Black Knight this year.
Â
The Black Knights recorded their second walk-off win of the season in game one Saturday. Army is 2-1 in extra innings in 2026 and 8-4 in the Chris Tracz era.
Â
The team's sub-nine inning extra inning contest was the first since March 30, 2024 at Lehigh, in a game also slated for seven innings.
Â
Army played error-free baseball in both games, the 18th and 19th times it committed no errors in a game this year.
