Baseball Finishes Regular Season Home Slate with Crisp Shutout Win Over LIU
April 28, 2026 | Baseball
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army West Point baseball may have been less than 24 hours removed from a dramatic, extra innings conference win when the LIU Sharks rolled into Doubleday Field for a midweek, non-league contest.
But the Black Knights (26-17) showed absolutely zero letdown, saving their first shutout win of the season for their final regular season home game of 2026, winning 7-0.
Making his first career start, Sean Newton pitched an unblemished three innings, allowing just one hit and two total baserunners, while collecting a pair of called strikeouts.
Max Donecea followed in relief, with a nearly identical appearance to Newton's line of two strikeouts, one walk, one hit and no runs allowed. The freshman moved to 3-0 with the winning decision Tuesday.
Walker Calvo pitched the final three innings, earning his first career save and fittingly ending the game with a called strikeout.
Just six Sharks reached base on Tuesday. Army's four hits allowed were tied for the fewest in a game this season, with its two walks issued being tied for the second fewest in 2026.
Army got on the board in the third inning, with a Mason Scott two out, two-RBI single up the middle to score Josiah Overbeek and Chris Barr.
Two innings later, with two outs and Thomas Schreck on third thanks to a failed pickoff turned E1 in the bottom of the fifth, John McKillop found the gap in the middle of the infield for an RBI single, before Zac Farrell launched his second homer in as many games to make it 5-0 Army.
The Black Knights added to the margin in the sixth, with an Overbeek RBI rope single to right, before a Thomas Schreck RBI groundout gave the club a 7-0 lead.
Army's pitchers combined for three perfect innings. LIU came closest to scoring in the sixth inning, but the Sharks were kept off the board thanks to a diving catch by Barr in center field, and a spectacular throw from Farrell in right field to get the final out at the plate on an attempted tag up.
By the Numbers
6: LIU's six baserunners were tied for the fewest Army has allowed in a game this year, and the fewest in a nine-inning game.
2-for-2: David Dubrule went 2-for-2 with a walk and sacrifice bunt on Tuesday.
2-for-3: McKillop went 2-for-3 at the plate.
2-for-5: Overbeek was 2-for-5 on Tuesday.
Black Knight Notes
Army's shutout win was its first since an 11-0 victory over Lehigh in game one of an April 13 twin bill a season ago.
Dubrule started at second base for just the second time this year, while McKillop made the start at first for the fourth time this year.
Ainsworth got the start in left field for the first time in 2026. His most recent start in left before Tuesday came in 2024, in game one of the star series vs. Navy on April 26.
Overbeek extended his on-base streak to 40 games, each game he has played in this year.
Next Up
Army concludes the regular season with a three-game series at Navy on May 2-3. Saturday's series opener at Max Bishop Stadium in Annapolis is set for 1:00 p.m.
Postseason dates, times and locations will be determined by this weekend's action across the league.
