NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Army West Point softball team used a dominant pitching performance from sophomore Renee Poirier to take a 3-0 victory over Iona on Wednesday.
The Black Knights improved to 21-9 on the season, while the Gaels dropped to 10-12.

- The Black Knights scored three runs on six hits and posted a clean sheet in the field with 0 errors for the eighth time this season, while the Gaels did not score on one hit and committed one error.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Ashley Yoo smacked a triple to lead off the game for Army, followed by a walk from Lacey Swafford, but Alana Evans was able to strand the two base runners on second and third to keep the Black Knights off the board in the first inning.
- It was a pitcher's duel throughout the majority of the game as each side was only able to muster one hit through the first four innings. The Gael's lone hit of the game came in the second inning in the form of a one-out single by Katie Newton.
- Sophomore Renee Poirier was dominant in her outing, going six innings while only allowing four base runners on a hit and three walks.
- The Black Knights pushed across the game's first run in the fifth when Yoo led off with her second walk of the game before being pinch ran for by Tyler McKinney. Swafford followed with a double to right center that allowed the senior outfielder to score from first to give Army the 1-0 lead.
- Three-straight hits by Alee Rashenskas, Maddie Kim and Emily Gray loaded the bases in the sixth for freshman pinch hitter Katie Ontiveros, who blew the game open with a two-run single.
- Freshman Macey Newbary entered the game in the bottom of the seventh and delivered a 1-2-3 inning to close out the game and record her first-career save.
UP NEXT
- The Black Knights welcome Holy Cross to West Point for their weekend Patriot League series. Saturday is scheduled for a doubleheader, while Sunday will be a single game. Both days are slated to begin at noon.
