Army Notches First Home Win, 9-5, Over Hofstra

WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army West Point baseball team earned its first home win of the season here Wednesday afternoon after it defeated Hofstra, 9-5.
The Black Knights trailed 1-0 early but responded with nine runs over a five-inning span to create a 9-1 gap between the teams heading into the sixth. The visitors then tried to rally in the ninth and did manage to score four runs but the Black Knights turned a double play before striking out the final batter to secure the win.
Pitcher Ray Bartoli was impressive in his second career start, going 5.0 innings allowing just two hits and one unearned run. The sophomore also recorded three strikeouts in his first collegiate win.
Andre Walden led the Black Knights' offensive output, finishing 3-for-5 with a run batted in and two runs scored. Seven of Army's nine cadet-athletes in the lineup registered at least one hit. Jacob Hurtubise, Jeremiah Adams and John McKenna all posted a team-best two RBI each. Anthony Giachin joined Walden with a game-high two runs scored.

- Flannery give up only one hit and one walk in 2.0 innings, while LePoint notched a clean sheet in his one inning of work.
- Opp closed out the final frame, allowing one hit, five walks and four runs.
- Army's pitching staff compiled eight strikeouts to five for Hofstra.
- The Cadets limited the Pride to just one extra base hit.
How It Happened
- Hofstra pulled in front 1-0 in the opening half inning after scoring an unearned run following a double to right field.
- Army quickly answered in the bottom of the first with five big runs on three hits and one error to break the game open at 5-1. The Black Knights loaded with bases with one out before McKenna drilled a single to left field to bring home two runs. With runners then on the corners Walden recorded an RBI-single to tally Army's third run. Josh White followed suit with the Cadets' third-straight single to score another run. The Black Knights touched home plate one final time following an unearned run.
- The Cadets extended their advantage to 7-1 after using a small two-out rally in the fifth. Walden, White and Tim Simoes all found themselves on base when Hurtubise stepped into the batter's box. The junior then delivered a single to left field to score Army's sixth and seventh run of the game.
- The Black Knights tacked on two more runs in the fifth when Adams doubled down the left field line with two outs to bring home Hurtubise and Giachin.
- Hofstra tried to rally in the ninth after earning one hit and five walks but the Cadets were able to register a double play and a strikeout to retire the side.
