Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader vs. Lafayette
April 19, 2025 | Baseball
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Coming off a disappointing loss Wednesday, Army West Point Baseball responded in resounding fashion, riding early leads and quality starting pitching to a Saturday doubleheader sweep vs. the Lafayette Leopards at Doubleday Field.
With the wins, the Black Knights secure both the weekend series and season series vs. Lafayette, with a game still to play this weekend. Army moves to 18-19 overall and 12-9 in Patriot League play.
Game 1
Andrew Berg pitched 5.2 innings in the seven-inning daycap to lead the Black Knights to a 5-2 win.
Army never trailed in the contest. A nine-pitch at-bat from Jack Quinlan in the second inning finished with a solo home run, and the lead only grew an inning later on a William Parker two-RBI double to score Chris Barr and Thomas Schreck, before a John McKillop RBI single plated Parker.
The Black Knights answered a pair of fourth inning Leopard runs in the fifth, on a Quinlan RBI single down the left field line to score Parker.
Berg—who improved to 4-2 on the season—struck out four batters, part of a pitching effort which stranded nine Lafayette batters on base. He wiggled out of trouble in the fifth unscathed despite allowing a pair of one-out singles. An inning later, with the bases loaded, Robbie Penswick recorded the frame's final out, and worked around a leadoff baserunner in the seventh to secure his team-leading fifth save.
Game 2
Like in Game 1, Army never trailed in Saturday's nightcap on its way to a 9-4 win.
With an early 6-0 lead whittled down to 6-4 in the seventh, Schreck launched a two-out, three-run home run to left, giving the Black Knights breathing room down the stretch of their doubleheader sweep.
McKillop and Michael Delph each recorded RBI doubles in the first to make it 4-0 Army. Army tacked into its lead with a Parker RBI single in the fourth before Ainsworth crossed the plate on a double steal an-at bat later.
Starting pitcher Justin Lehman earned the win, moving to 4-3 on the season. He struck out a pair over six frames and allowed four runs, three earned. For the second consecutive game, a save was recorded, with Kevin Reavey claiming his third save of 2025 with a three-inning relief effort in which he allowed just one baserunner and faced the minimum of batters. The plebe inherited runners on the corners with nobody out in the seventh, but escaped the inning without a run credited to him.
By the Numbers
4-for-6: McKillop was 4-for-6 across the twin bill, with three total RBIs.
5: Quinlan drew five total free passes across both games, with a walk on each end of the doubleheader, and three hit-by-pitches in the nightcap. He was 2-for-3 across both games, including a 2-for-2 Game 1.
10: Berg retired 10 of his first 12 batters faced in Game 1.
1: Lehman allowed just one hit in his first five innings pitched in Game 1.
Black Knight Notes
Army stole seven bases in the nightcap, a season-high for the team in a single game. Barr and Parker had three each, with the mark repersenting a season and career-high for Parker, a season-high for Barr, and tying a career-high for Barr set vs. Air Force March 2, 2024
Quinlan's three hit-by-pitches drawn in Saturday's nightcap were the most a Black Knight has induced in a single game this season.
In Game 2, Delph made his first start at first base since Army's home opener vs. Fordham on March 8. In between then and Saturday, the native of Knoxville, Tenn. had made two starts on the mound and one relief pitching appearance. He went 2-for-4 Saturday.
Dating back to the back end of a March 15 twin bill at Navy, Army has won seven straight Saturday games, a run that also includes four wins over Lafayette.
Schreck extended his on-base streak to 23 games.
