Baseball Drops Series Rubber Matchup to Holy Cross
March 15, 2026 | Baseball
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army West Point baseball was playing for the series on Sunday against the Holy Cross Crusaders, and despite an early 3-0 lead at Doubleday Field, the Black Knights would drop the contest 10-4 and fall in the three-game weekend series, two games to one.Â
Â
Army (7-10, 1-2) took its momentum from Saturday's win and scored three runs in the first inning. After back-to-back walks from Addison Ainsworth and Chris Barr to open the inning, Carter Hewitt stepped up with the bases loaded and poked a double just inside the third base foul line, scoring Ainsworth and Barr before a Thomas Schreck sacrifice fly made it a three-run lead for the Black Knights.Â
Â
Looking to maintain the lead, starting pitcher Trey Ates kept the Crusaders off the board in the first and second innings. In the third, he limited the damage to just one run allowed with the bases loaded and nobody out in the frame. After Ates faced the minimum in the fourth, the visitors took their first lead of the game with three runs in the fifth.Â
Â
The junior starting pitcher struck out a pair of batters, pitching four innings and taking a no-decision.
Â
In the bottom of the seventh, down a run and having been kept off the board from the first to that point, Josiah Overbeek poked a two-out double to right field, plating Barr and tying the game at 4-4.
Â
However, Holy Cross would jump back in front with a three run eighth, and pulled away in the ninth with another trio of runs.Â
Â
Mark Abell pitched 1.2 innings out of the bullpen, picking up two strikeouts. Robbie Penswick threw 2.1 innings and took the loss, with Overbeek and Jakob Vanderhave tossing the ninth.Â
Â
The series loss comes in the Patriot League opening set for both teams, who before the season were picked to finish in the top two of the conference. The loss doesn't end the season series between the sides however, with Army making the return trip to Worcester next month.
Â
By the Numbers
Â
2: Hewitt had two RBIs for the second consecutive game.Â
Â
2-for-4: Dubrule was 2-for-4 at the plate in the series finale.Â
Â
2-for-5: Barr was 2-for-5 Sunday.Â
Â
Black Knight Notes
Â
The lineup card remained mostly intact from Friday and Saturday's contests, but with Max McGlone taking the DH spot over John McKillop on Sunday.
Â
Ainsworth drew four walks Sunday, the most by a Black Knight in a single game this year. It represented the most amount of walks drawn by an Army player in a single game since Justin Lehman vs. Georgia State on March 10, 2024.
Â
Next Up
Â
Army is next in action vs. UMass on Tuesday and UAlbany on Wednesday, with both games starting at 3:35 p.m. from Doubleday Field.
Â
The Black Knights return to league play next weekend for a three-game series at Lafayette.
