Baseball Suffers Saturday Setback at VCU
March 07, 2026 | Baseball
RICHMOND, Va. – Army West Point baseball made a mid-game push, but allowed a flurry of runs late in Saturday's contest at the VCU Rams and dropped the middle game of the three-game series, 11-3.
Â
With the result, VCU clinches the series, and Army (5-6) will play to avoid the sweep on Sunday.
Â
Starting pitcher Kevin Reavey settled into the game after allowing a trio of early runs. The Rams tagged the sophomore for a run in the first and two in the second, but Reavey would hang zeros in the third, fourth and fifth stanzas to keep the Black Knights in the game. Still, he took the decision for the second time in 2026.
Â
Reavey's efforts on the mound kept Army within arm's length, and the Army bats in the sixth inning got the squad within one. The timely two-out base hit came from Carter Hewitt, and it brought home William Parker and Josiah Overbeek from third and second base to make it 3-2.
Â
Michael Delph's scoreless bottom of the sixth out of the bullpen gave Army additional momentum. However, it was VCU instead that tacked on three runs in the seventh to pull away, with a five-run eighth putting the game out of reach for the Black Knights.Â
Â
Jakob Vanderhave, William Leahy and Walker Calvo each recorded outs in relief late. Â
Â
David Dubrule collected an RBI in the ninth to score Jake Pineda, who entered the game in the final frame as a pinch-hitter.Â
Â
By the Numbers
Â
2-for-4: Overbeek was 2-for-4 Saturday.Â
Â
Black Knight Notes
Â
Bennie Franquiz made his first career start, with the freshman slotting into second base.
Â
Chris Barr made his first career start at center field, after making 30 starts a season ago in left field.
Â
Calvo made his season debut on the mound after making nine pitching appearances as a freshman a season ago.
Â
Pineda, JT Craig and Mason Scott each pinch hit in the ninth, with Scott recording his first career hit in the inning.Â
