Baseball Holds off Lehigh for Doubleheader Sweep
April 11, 2026 | Baseball
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Army West Point baseball saw its second game of Saturday's doubleheader develop into a competitive game late, but the Black Knights held on for the 13-9 game win and twin bill sweep.
Â
Army (18-14, 9-6) will play Sunday for the series sweep, with the outright series win now locked up.
Â
Starting pitcher Trey Ates allowed just one hit in his six-inning start in the nightcap, taking a no-hitter into the seventh inning. The senior improved to 3-1 with the win.Â
Â
After Max Donecea recorded the first two outs in the seventh out of the bullpen, Mark Abell entered and pitched the final 2.1 innings, picking up his first career save.Â
Â
The Black Knights move four games above .500 with their third win in a row.
Â
Game One
Â
The Black Knights held on in the seven-inning opening game on Saturday for a 4-2 win, critically limiting the damage in a pair of innings to one run each for Lehigh.
Â
Starting pitcher Kevin Reavey earned his third win of the season, striking out five over 4.2 innings. The contest's seven-inning nature allowed the Pennsylvanian to claim the decision despite pitching fewer than five frames. In the second inning, he escaped a bases loaded, no out jam with only a sacrifice fly allowed.Â
Â
Then in the fifth inning, with the bases loaded and one run having crossed the plate, Reavey handed the ball to Michael Delph, who recorded a high-leverage strikeout on a full count to keep Army in front, 3-2. Then in the seventh, Josiah Overbeek came on to pitch from right field, working around a pair of baserunners to pick up his team-leading fourth save of the year.
Â
Earlier in the matchup after the Mountain Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the second, Chris Barr tied the game for Army on a squeeze bunt to score Mason Scott from third. Army grabbed the lead two innings later, on a Thomas Schreck RBI double, before Jack Quinlan made it 3-1 with a single through the left side to score Schreck.
Â
Up just one in the seventh and looking to tack on an insurance run, William Parker recorded an infield single to bring home Barr from third.Â
Â
Game Two
Â
Army wasted little time in the second game, getting on the board in the top of the first, with Schreck poking an opposite field single to right to score Barr.
Â
After Lehigh tied the game in the second on a wild pitch, the Black Knights jumped back in front, with a Parker two-out line drive to the left field wall, bringing home Overbeek from first base.Â
Â
With two outs and the bases loaded an inning later, Chris Barr hit a ground ball up the middle to bring home both Addison Ainsworth and Jake Pineda, making it 4-1 in the fourth.
Â
Army then continued to apply the pressure on offense with a six-run fifth inning. After Carter Hewitt scored on a wild pitch, Ainsworth drove in a run on a sacrifice fly and Scott scored on a fielder's choice after the throw home from first went errant. Schreck was then hit by a pitch with the bases loaded before Parker drove in a pair with a single through the left side.
Â
Parker then came through for a solo home run in the seventh, his sixth of the season to equal his mark from all of last year, and extending Army's lead to 11-1.
Â
With the Black Knights' lead suddenly whittled down to just three heading into the eighth, Parker recorded his sixth RBI of the game to get Army back up five. And despite a Lehigh run in the eighth, Abell would close the game in the ninth with little added drama.Â
