WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point baseball team returns to West Point following a 10-game season-opening road trip to play its home opener on Wednesday afternoon. The Black Knights will host Hofstra at Johnson Stadium at Doubleday Field at 3:30 p.m.
Both teams bring identical 3-7 records into the midweek tilt and are coming off victories. Army closed its weekend in North Carolina with a 6-4 victory over high-powered UNC Greensboro on Sunday afternoon.
Junior Kris Lindner, Senior Justin Reece and sophomore Jon Rosoff each had two hits, with Lindner scoring twice, and Reece driving home two. Junior Alex Dickerson, and sophomores Keegan Vega and John McCarthy contributed one hit and one RBI apiece in Army's victory over the Spartans.
McCarthy leads the Patriot League with 14 RBI this season and is Army's leading hitter with a .360 batting average. Reece is hitting .351 through the first 10 games and Dickerson has a .333 average in 15 at-bats.
Hofstra has won three straight games following a weekend sweep of Coppin State. The Pride offense exploded for 49 runs in the series and its pitching staff limited the Eagles to four runs, including two shutout wins. The Pride dropped three games at No. 4 Texas A&M to open the season, prior to a four-game sweep at Missouri the following weekend.
Brad Witkowski leads Hofstra with a .361 average and Ryan Karl is behind him at .359. Right-handed pitcher Andrew Mundy (0-0, 1.59 ERA) is Wednesday's projected starter and he will oppose Army's Daniel Burggraaf (0-0, 11.57 ERA), who is making his first-career start.
