WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army West Point Baseball returns home following its two-game road trip this past weekend for a midweek matchup against Siena.
First pitch is set for 3:35 p.m. at Doubleday Field, with the game available on ESPN+.
Notes and Storylines
» The Black Knights knocked off UAlbany 9-4 on Wednesday to win its Doubleday Field opener. It was Army's third consecutive home opener victory, as the squad rode nine unanswered runs after going down 3-0 early.
In just his second career appearance, freshman RHP Robbie Penswick delivered four masterful frames, allowing just three hits and no runs while striking out five. Trey Ates followed Penswick with two scoreless innings. Combined, the Army pitchers' 11 strikeouts were a team-high, which also included appearances from starter Trevor Finan and reliever Joel Rubin.
» Last time the Siena Saints visited West Point, fans were treated to a 16-inning marathon on March 22, 2023. In what was Army's home opener last season, Justin Lehman took a hit by pitch with the bases loaded to secure the win. The Black Knights would win 13-1 two weeks later in Loudonville to extend its winning streak over Siena to seven games, dating back to 2017.
» Senior Sam Ruta continued his torrid pace in Friday's twin bill against Fordham and Fairfield, homering in each game and going a combined 3-for-7 with five RBIs. Ruta leads the team in all major hitting categories.
» Army displayed offensive prowess in its four-game series March 8-10 at Georgia State, slugging .500 as a team and combining for a .930 OPS. Sam Ruta was .429 across the four-game set in Atlanta, with three home runs and a 1.214 SLG. William Parker, Derek Berg and Coleson Titus each joined Ruta in hitting north of .300 over the four-game stretch. The Black Knights also drew 27 walks during the weekend.
The Black Knights swept March 10's two games to leave Georgia with a series split, hitting .323 as a team in the pair of wins.
» In March 10's doubleheader sweep at Georgia State, Lehman was 0-for-1 in each game, but totaled seven walks Sunday (Three in Game 1; Four in Game 2). He crossed the plate twice in each matchup. Additionally, he was the starting and winning pitcher in Game 2.
In last Wednesday's win over UAlbany, Lehman proved he could also get on base with power, hitting an RBI triple in the sixth inning.
Behind Enemy Lines
» Siena still seeks its first win of the season. The Saints came close to taking games off CAA foe Stony Brook March 8-9, losing three games by one run each. A pair of two-run games at Mercer and a loss at Boston College round out the team's fortnight.
» The Saints boast three starters hitting .300 or higher. The squad is led by fifth-year outfielder Austin Rachiele, who leads with a .351 AVG and an OPS of 1.100.
